I used to get two 18 wheeler loads of chicken extract (what comes out of the chicken) every spring for use as fertilizer. Gave the farm a nice country rhino-ambiance.

“Chicken extract.” Never heard it called that before.

There is an old story about Harry Truman. He would call any proposal he didn't like "a pile of manure".
His staff went to Bess and asked her "Couldn't you get him to stop calling things manure?"
She replied "Oh, no! It has taken me 30 years to get him to call it that!".

Somewhere between Dallas and Colorado is a large holding area for cattle right next to the highway (not interstate). I mean huge. I can't imagine mustard gas being much worse.

Thats a good one. It also gave me a chuckle thinking about one of the first times many years ago, when family from the Bronx came up to visit us, and one of my cousins said to their father, "Dad, I thought you said we were coming up here to visit and smell the fresh country air... it smells like poop".

There were dairy farms all throughout the county back then, and my grandfather also had a chicken farm too back then, and used to supply our city family with eggs. Good times back then.

I heard a saying many years ago, "The country air is rich and rare, it stimulates the mind."

The other thing about country air. At 5 a.m. in the winter it's cold as heck to have to get up to do chores before school. I used to say, "better my cousin than me," when we'd visit my Grandparents' farm in KS at Christmas with my Uncle and Aunt just up the road.

I'm not sure about cattlemen, but it's always a crapshoot, so to speak, with farmers. Between the weather and the changing cost of commodities, the individual farmer walks a tightrope.

I farmed for 30 years. Made a profit for 26 of those years. But there's a big difference between making a profit and making a living.

Something on the order of 80% of the farmers in this country hold a second job or more to make ends meet.
