That DPreview post is very dated (2013). A lot has changed since then. My Z7 most certainly blacks out between frames but it seems no worse than an SLR. I have set it to high frame rates and it does not continuously black out nor pull any stunt like showing me the previous frame.

We imagine improving our photography, but we cling to our old DSLRs.

I've actually found more recent articles saying the same thing. I'll find out for myself during my workshop.

Thanks, Bill. I may have misunderstood about the blackout. It's something that I'll be able to see, or not, for myself on my workshop. If memory serves, the blackout issue was definitely something that that particular photographer mentioned as a concern, so I'll go back and re-watch his podcast on the Z6 ii.

As far as switching away from Nikon - that is not something that is going to happen in the near future. I am first and foremost a wildlife photographer.

The EVF “reaction” to an exposure varies, according to the model and how you set up the camera. Mine has an electronic shutter with a ‘no preview’ option. There’s a small red dot that blinks. If you want, you can turn on a fake shutter noise... the finder image is steady as a rock. It’s great for events where no noise is acceptable.

The Nikon FTZ adapter is great, but a tad slow. Nothing beats new, OEM mirrorless lenses if you need speed. The new lenses are also sharper than old dSLR lenses, as a group, because they are easier to design than dSLR glass, and computer aided lens design and manufacturing keep getting better. And there is NO need to tune any lens to a mirrorless camera body. Focus is achieved on sensor.

Thanks for your questions. You are absolutely right. I need to deeply explore my reasons for wanting to buy a mirrorless camera. I am in a quandary at this point. I also have to wonder if Canon, for example, will eventually do away with DSLRs. The other question I suppose I have to ask myself is whether I should upgrade to a new DSLR. There are times the computer chip in my EOS 6D in the set button doesn't allow me to do other functions. It has been repaired, but it still acts up sometimes.

Kindest,

Thanks for your response. The Canon does have a door that closes when you take the lens off. I think that keeps a lot of dust out.

Barb, you probably want to use <Quote Reply> as you work through responses.

Canon is actively moving away from DSLR technology. They've officially said they're not releasing new EF lenses. They don't have any DSLR bodies listed for 2021 release, even if they haven't said officially they're stopping DSLRs. Neither of these plans 'hurts' any existing DSLRs. But, if your DSLR body has an annoying problem, that could be a reason to consider a new body. Also, if Canon did the repair, consider if the warranty on that repair is still active.

I actually did hold the Canon R 5 and play with for a bit in the camera store. I get along with the EOS 6D. It is heavier than the mirrorless. But I can't say that it really bothers me. It is a lot of money for me to pay for a camera. I would have to use an adapter for DSLR lenses. The president of the camera group I belong to said and hopefully I am relating this correctly that the lower pixel rate adds some color to it. I can also reduce noise for higher ISO speeds by adjusting in the menu.

The other question I suppose I have to ask myself is whether I should upgrade to a new Canon DSLR. There are times the computer chip in my EOS 6D in the set button doesn't allow me to do other functions. It has been repaired, but it still acts up sometimes. Any suggestions would be welcome.

I feel like I am in a quandary right now. I am aware of Canon moving away. Do you own a Canon DSLR or a mirrorless camera. I wouldn't use the mirrorless cameras for video because they get too hot because of their lack of a fan.

I currently own a Canon EOS 6d. I have researched both Rs.

I wanted to get input from people who have switched to these mirrorless cameras, or stayed with the DSLR camera that they have. If they bought another camera, would they buy a mirrorless camera or stay with DSLR?

Thanks.

Barb, pop down to a camera store and try both out, it will be an easy decision once in hand...

Happy hunting!

Hey Barb, one outstanding question from earlier is what lenses you have already as that tends to impact your decision making.

Regarding video and for confirmation, how much 8K video do you record today? How does a 20 minute limit at 8K and up to 15 minutes in 4K 120fps impact your intended EOS R5 usage? It seems this technical concern would be difficult for you (anyone) to encounter except for someone who's job is to find where a new camera breaks.

Regarding the 'set' button, now that you still have the problem, have you considered getting it properly repaired? Have you considered getting a quote from Canon and considering if a repair is the cost-effective approach vs buying a new $2500 EOS R6?

The one suggestion in this thread that I have not seen as an option is to buy a used DSLR. There has to be some good ones available from others that are upgrading to mirrorless. Of course that only applies if you decide to stay with DSLR.
