This is a Crane Fly that I preserved last spring by putting it in a pill bottle along with a mothball to kill any microscopic scavengers that like to munch on departed insects. I inspected it this morning to see how it was holding up and of course the best way to do that is to stage it for a focus stacking session.
They are absolutely harmless and many do not have any mouthparts at all and as adults their only focus is on mating. Those few adult species that do have mouthparts that do eat tend to drink nectar from flowers.
I swear I saw that thing on the scify channel!

Thanks, UTMike. They are quite, quite strange looking in their own right as well as very alien looking. I've posted several of them in the past both on-the-hoof and as a staged specimen.

Wow! Things getting scary again looking at this guy
Some things should not be seen in close-up. I'll have to sleep with the shotgun under the pillow again
Thanks, and we are ever so lucky that Mother Nature has limited the size to which they can grow.

Fantastic image of an ugly SOB.
Looks like a still straight out of a SF movie. Fantastic work as always.

Nice capture, right out of an old 50's monster movie
Freak show, great macro, Sippy.
Excellent work. How many photos& how many would it take to get the whole fly?
