This is a preserved Hoover Fly. They mimic a bee or wasp which they evolved as a form of defense albeit not a great one. I've included an image of one that I took in the backyard on a much warmer day past to provide a view of what they look like going about their day. The red in the picture is our plastic gas can that we keep under the open shead.
