I shot this image of Black-Crowned Night Heron this afternoon. This was my first edit - just finished a bit ago. Comments welcome.
Your whites a a little blown but it’s a really nice shot. Nice pose and a very nice background. I see these guys with the egrets and I really like them. A more calm nature. Amazing eye color.
Great capture. I agree that you could reduce the white a bit in pp. You have lost the detail in the crest. Otherwise excellent rendering.
Good capture, nice pp. Maybe play with sliders for highlights whites and blacks just a little.
Composition, background, and posing of the bird magnificent. I do not find the redish reflected light objectionable.
Very nice, only edit would be to move the black of the eye to the left so it is looking at you and add a catch light
I'm not a birder and have difficulty trying to get them in the frame, let alone in focus! I think this is really pretty wonderful. The feather detail is really good; the pose is interesting; the background is absolutely lovely - interesting but not distracting; the separation of the subject is superb. The only downside that I see is the one bit of overblown highlights. Not sure if that could be toned down to bring out detail or not. But to me it's not enough to ruin the image.
Thank you all for your input. My histogram was not showing any blowout on the whites but I certainly see where I could drop the highlights in the breast plumage.
Nicely captured Daniel. Good detail in the bird and nicely blurred background. Bev
As already noted, there are several pluses for this shot. My (minor) criticism is that the face usually becomes the focus of interest and in this shot it's slightly in shadow.
I've made comments like that before and apparently it's not something that worries birders much (if at all
).
I like the BCNH and particularly like this pose!

My screen agrees with your histogram. The whites on the breast look great from here, not blown out at all. I think different viewers and screens see things differently, and graphical settings like brightness and such have a big effect on what people see.
To me, on my equipment, everything is spot on.
