Question on using Canon to Olympus adapters

Hello! I've kept my Canon 5DM4 to use the specialty lens (and two Canon lenses). I now have an Olympus OMD E1M3.

The specialty lenses include the Rokinon for shooting Northern Lights (yes I know Oly has astrophotography setting) and 3 Lensbaby lenses. I have also kept Canon's 100mm lens for macro (with their macro ring lights).

Is there an adapter that will connect the Canon lenses to the Olympus? If so, what would I either lose or gain?

Thank you 😊 in advance.

It looks like you're going to be out either a lot of money or out of autofocus and metering for the full-frame EF lenses.

Take the option of the "FotodioX Pro Lens Mount Adapter for Olympus OM Lens to Canon EF-Mount Camera" listed as $39.95 at B&H. This adapter doesn't control the lens, meaning manual focus and shooting (I think) only at the wide open aperture for the lens.

This option "Viltrox EF-M1 Lens Mount Adapter for Canon EF or EF-S-Mount Lens to Micro Four Thirds Camera" lists for $136 at B&H. The reviews on this product at B&H are all over the place. It if works for your camera, the micro 4/3 crop factor is 2x, so your 100mm macro will have an effective field of view of a 200mm lens.

Prices just go up, where after about $150, the adapters begin to include glass trying to undo that 2x crop factor, typically at a loss of 1-stop of light. The "Metabones T Speed Booster XL 0.64x Adapter for Full-Frame Canon EF-Mount Lens to Select Micro Four Thirds-Mount Cameras" comes in at $649. If I read the comments correctly, the resulting crop factor is 1.3 with the adapter where your EF 100mm becomes an effective 130mmm. The effective aperture seems to get faster with this "speed booster", from f/2.8 on the lens to f/1.8 in performance.

Chg_Canon, you are so right! At my level of photography and my age, the $649 option is too expensive for me. The Viltrox' price point is ok. I will look at the reviews. BH return policy will let me try it. Please know, that I appreciate all your helpful comments over the years. Thank you again.

I think I would pick an adapter without AF or speedboost but should have the ability to set the aperture.

BebuLamar, thank you for your suggestion. Do you have a specific brand in mind?

Canon's EF lenses are electronic being EOS technology - Electro-Optical System. You're unlikely to find a manual controller on the adapter and there's no aperture ring on the lens.

If it controls the aperture, it will also provide AF, cuz adapters will have either no electronic pass through or will have a complete set of pins. Obviously no pins is only for totally manual optics with no need for electronic coupling.

The Kipon in the attached photo provides full coupling including AF. It has one odd shortcoming when used with a Lumix. If the Canon lens has OIS that will work. If a Canon lens lacks OIS, the odd problem arises. The adapter tells the Lumix that “all Canon lenses have IS” which means the Lumix body will not activate IBIS ... so, no IS at all.

Shown below is a non-OIS Canon on a Pen-F. Both the IBIS and the AF work.
What works for a Pen-F should also work for your EM-1.
______________________________

The lower image shows some material was removed from the barrel of the adapter. The tripod socket will now accept a SMALL ball head. The barrel extends bellow the bottom plate.

The other removal provides better clearance to a nearby control button ... which is my AF activation button.

Notice that the adapter has no tripod socket of its own :-(

There are plenty of adapters, called Speedboosters, that will not only retain full auto functionality of the lens, but will reduce the image to fit the full image circle on MFT, increasing speed one stop in the process. I am only familiar with the Metabones speedbooster, which will literally retain full optical quality of the lens, including corner sharpness. But Metabones are expensive. Vitrox makes a similar adapter for ~$150, and my guess is that it is also good. Google Vitrox Speedbooster review and see what they say.

Which SpeedBooster are you using ?
O.71 or 0.65 ? Did you hafta tweak it ?
Seems like it’s exceptionally compatible with your lenses :-)

Last fall B&H had the Vello auto lens adapter Canon EF/EF-S lens to micro four thirds mount in one of the 24 hour sales for $99.00 it is regular price was $299.00. I purchased it and have used it with both the 100 macro 2.8 L and the 100-400 L 11 lens. Both manual and auto focus works on the EM1-mk3 with both lens.

Thank you so much User_ID for your extensive response. I thought I was deciding upon something relatively straightforward. I've learned that it is but only if I want to spend $649. Not at this point of age/health.

Thank you kymarto...the reviews were good just as you said. However, when I looked at the chart for compatible lenses, the Lensbaby and Rokinon were not listed.

Thank you temup for your comments. I wanted to use the 100mm for its macro. I do have Olympus 60 mm macro lens but my Canon 100 mm has the ring lights. They have a unit for approximately $59 for macro with manual focus, but then I would need another adapter for the Rokinon 14mm for astrophotography.

Thank you all so very much! After going through this process, I will keep the 5DM4 as a backup camera so I can continuously use the different lenses when required. I will continue to learn the Olympus OMD E1M3... the Canon only has about 3500 shutter clicks ... Canon said when I had it cleaned for my trip Feb 2019. It's heavy but I won't be using it for the majority of the time.

Speaking of time, thank you for taking time from your busy schedules explaining the choices available. If I only had Canon lenses to use, then the Vello or Viltrox would have been great alternatives to the $649 brand.

Hi Linda. I bought a Kipon, used, from Robert’s Camera/ Used Photo Pro in Indianapolis. I usually shoot on aperture priority mode and the electronic compatibility works for me. Someone else shows the Kipon mounted to a PEN F. It is well built but significantly cheaper than the other similar option. Good luck. JimR
