I'm shooting with a Canon RP which I love but battery life is very poor compared to the 7D I was using before. This means I need to have a few extra batteries in my bag but Canon batteries are expensive. You get what you pay for though and the cheap aftermarket batteries I've bought don't have the capacity and they don't live long. Can anyone recommend an aftermarket brand that matches the quality of the Canon batteries? They obviously wouldn't be the cheapest batteries out there but they're bound to be less money than the Canons.
Thanks

I've been using Lenmar batteries for my Canon, but I'm not paying attention how long they last compared to OEM.
I have four of them and just change them out when required. My Canon battery is ten years old, some of my Lenmars are about the same age also.

My mileage with Wasabi batteries are fantastic in my Canon cameras. I haven't noticed any difference compared to OEM batteries.

You can have power and your Starbucks also

I'm shooting with a Canon RP which I love but batt... (show quote)

When I purchased my new camera, I noticed the batteries drained very quickly. So I kept it off most of the time. I also don’t use the LCD screen that much when on. The Screen draws a lot of power especially if the screen articulates. I don’t like the thought of using third party manufacturer batteries. My biggest fear (probably unfounded) is if the third party battery leaks inside the camera. It’s not very pretty and likely to be expensive to repair. I have purchased a total of five batteries which translates to about $400. These batteries were purchased over several trips to B&H in NYC.

I am not an expert in Canon EOS RP but I think that you could save battery juice by shutting off everything. Then putting the camera in the bag.

There would be no logical reason why an articulated screen would draw more power.
Same screen, just on an extension.

While it doean’ t seem likely. The tiny hinge on the side of the LCD has wires and acts in a small way like a resistor. But the LCD screen still draws a lot of charge from the battery.
I’m sure there are many advocates for third party batteries. I’m a little skittish about them and prefer original manufacturer.

Believe me, there is no power loss in 1-3 inches of wire in those things. Absolutely none that is measurable.
Yes, display screens themselves do draw a good amount of power.
The screen on my camera is off, unless I want to see an image or adjust parameters.
I use the viewfinder.

You are right of course but it was by saving the thirty bucks wherever I could that I came to be able to afford the thousands in camera equipment.
In this case though its more than thirty bucks. A canon LP-E17 costs about $90 here (Canada). Four Bonacell clones are $50 and come with a charger.

The RP is mirrorless so unless the camera is sleeping either the screen in the viewfinder or the screen on the back are always on. Nature of the beast I guess. The camera has so much going for it though that I'll put up with its appetite for batteries and just keep feeding it.

Even if you may have to change them out more often, having four, wouldn't you be ahead?

I thank you for setting me straight on articulating screens. I have a camera with wi-do and GPS. I find I save a substantial amount of battery power by turning every thing off. I have never used or even played with a mirrorless not because I’m shy I just never had the chance.

When I order memory cards, tripod or anything else I also include a Canon battery on the buy list. That is why I have five Canon Batteries. You may want to buy a battery grip. Both batteries are drained equally. I would use Canon batteries. However I have used double AA batteries and they drain even faster.

I have always used Wasabi batteries and find them to be as good if not better than the Canon OEM batteries. There are those who will tell you to only buy OEM but really they have no experience using the generic equivalents. The reason your RP goes through batteries so quickly is because your EVF is consuming energy that your DSLR didn't.
