I still shine my shoes. Gives me a good feeling to see well shined shoes.

Anyone who has worn the uniform knows how to shine shoes (unless things have recently changed).

Back in 66 we got a new Commander at the Air Force Tech school at Sheppard AFB, he put and end to spit shined shoes and Starched Fatigues, his reasoning was that to much study time was being wasted on these tasks.

I am female . old, and never been in the Army. shiny shoes/sandals are a must to me....just like clean fingernails and clean feet.

Shiny is great but we were shining theses boots to the point you could use them as a mirror, and and fatigues that were so starched and pressed that they could stand at attention.

As a young kid, it was my job early on Sunday morning to polish the shoes of everyone before church. I felt already trained when I joined the military!

This reminds me of one of the letters my Dad sent to Mom when he was in the AAC, He was at Sheppard in Aug 1941 and was a member of the first graduating class there. Then went to Utah and his Sgt stopped the marching , drilling exercises because it was taking too much time from their more important studies.

Absolutely - some guys would use a coat of Johnson’s GloCoat (liquid floor wax). Does the phrase “breaking starch” (when putting on a fresh pair of fatigues) come to mind?

Clean fingernails are easy. If he good Lord wanted me to have clean feet he'd have put them closer to my hands so they'd be easier to reach.

Amen to the "fond" memories of Basic Training at Fort Jackson, SC from the middle of July to the middle of September in 1956! Blister Bags, Salt Pills and Sand Gnats (Flying Teeth)! During this early time in the US Army is when I really started to grow up!!!!
