I have used a Canon MG6220 for many years without any difficulties. It has been a real workhorse. About two months ago I started getting error messages. I was able to clear all of this until now. I have a 6C10 message that will NOT clear. So, I guess the printer is toast. Unfortunately, I just purchased ink for it, so I'm stuck with ink cartridge costs also. I've looked at printers that use the same cartridges, but have not been able to find any for sale. I was told today by a Staples employee to beware of a couple of the printers they actually carry because the cartridges are hard to come by. I did look at one that has the "mega-tanks" that you refill. But no one has it in stock. I used to use HP printers, but found them unreliable (don't last very long). Not sure I want to go to an Epson, although I know they're sort of the workhorse of the industry. I understand they use a LOT more ink than Canons do. Have never used a Brother.

Can anyone offer me advice about a new printer? Where to buy a replacement (that uses 226 inks)? Thanks!

Bet you can sell the ink to someone here, which would free up your choices. Personally, I wouldn't base selection on the ink, even if I just had to toss it. Research & input here will likely be useful. When I replace my "every day" printer it will be with an Eco tank, I think. Sorry, and best of luck!

Thank you, Quickdraw. I never thought about selling it here. Thanks for the suggestion.

You should be able to get a previous model of Epson cheaper than the latest model. I have an Epson P600 for photography and a Brother with a large cartridge for letters etc., which is very economical.

I purchased the Epson P600 when it was reduced about 4 years ago and it uses slightly larger inks than the previous Epson models and the inks last longer and when left for months without printing it still prints perfectly. This printer doesn't go through the process of cleaning the heads every time you are going to print and therefore uses less ink.

I also have an HP Printer (most printers are cheap but it is the inks that are expensive) that prints colour prints that I use for less important colour prints such as camera club competitions. This printer came with a deal of 3 months free printing if you signed up for automatic inks but of course, it depended on how many prints you made per month. I opted for 15 prints and I get those free but it means keeping tabs on how many prints you make, but you can go into your account to see how many prints that you have made in the present month. I got the 15 prints free as I threatened HP that I was going to disclose that the information they gave regarding the free sheets weren't exactly true as they hadn't explained that it was only for a short time. I have noticed that these are now charged at £1 per 15 sheets, but of course I get them free. I must point out that these two printers are not for photographic prints but they enable me to get prints without using my expensive Epson inks.

I hope that other members will advise on their set up. In the meantime, have a look at the price of printers.

I have an older Epson EcoTank printer and am pleased with its (almost) no ink cost. I would NOT use it to print photos (I use an Epson P800 for that). You can get the EcoTank printers with various levels of features. Check out B&H. Best if Luck.

Thanks for the info. However, I do use this printer to do photos on occasion. I'm looking at B&H. It seems everything I'm interested in is out of stock and they have no idea when they'll be available!

I've also just started looking for a new printer, my Canon Pro 100 also being "toast" as you so aptly put it. I don't know what features you are looking for (other than the ink) so don't know if this will be helpful. One of my requirements is for a printer that does at least 13 x 19 inch photo quality prints and I've looked a several independent reviews, each of a number of printers, and one that keeps popping up consistenty near the top of the lists is the Epson Expresson Photo XP-15000, price listed by some sellers, including Staple's, as $349.99 which makes it quite a bargain according to the reviews. However, it is backordered at most stores, including Staples. This one won't meet your wish to get a computer that uses the same ink as your old one, but the price on this Epson is so good I would think that would make up for the loss on the ink.

Obviously I don't have any personal experience with this printer but you might want to reseach it yourself if this is the sort of printer you are looking for. I think I am gong to order one from Staples even if I have to wait 3 weeks to get it. Hope this is of some help.

Thanks so much for your response. Actually the printer I'm looking for is my business one (that prints everyday stuff like checks, bills, etc.) My 100 is working nicely, but doesn't do well on that type of stuff. One of the problems I'm encountering is that the shelves are EMPTY in the printer section! And it's tax time!

If that is the case a Brother with a large cartridge is very economical and is the type that I use for everyday things. It is a workhorse. I do buy the Brother Cartridge though.

The cartridge is about 8" inch long although I haven't measured it, but you get the idea which means that it uses a tank which is only black ink. There are different types of Brother printers so make sure that it has the feature that you want such as does it do double sided if you need that. Does it scan etc.

Does it print in colour? Would it print small photographs acceptably?

I was faced with the same problem a couple months ago. I needed a general printer for simple things like printing sales receipts, letters etc. Having Air Print for wireless printer was a must. I use a Canon Pro 100 for photos. When that goes I’ll order the Pro 200.

Anyway lots of printers were out of stock. I checked Amazon and B&H for simple printer; I didn’t even need color. I learned fast that simple was more expensive than giving in to a color, does everything printer. I just looked at what was in stock and picked the one with the smallest foot print that was a Canon. So, I ended up with a Canon TS8320 for $189. It’s out of stock now till mid February.

My advice is either to have a friend or family member print out your taxes on their printer or pick from those printers currently in stock at the store of your choice. As a as Covid 19 is around, supply won’t get much better.

Sorry no. The one I have only print B&W and only A4, but the HP printer would do both.

It's a minefield selecting the right printer so you will have to do some research before selecting one.

Thanks, Mario. I looked at that printer, and thought perhaps it would do. But the sales clerk told me that the ink is REALLY hard to get. You probably haven't had to purchase new ink yet. But I'd appreciate hearing more from you when you have to replenish.
