For those of you who use IrfanView, a new version is out now, 4.57.

One of the updates is a new raw file plugin, based on LibRAW.

Have you ever compared it to Faststone? I'm assumining similar tools?

I have played around with Faststone occasionally, but since I started using IrfanView in the mid '90s my muscle memory is tuned to IrfanView so I stick with it.

Yes, I think the tools are similar but IrfanView did not interpret raw files so this is an improvement. I don't expect to use it on my raw files because I want ALL my images to be in my Lightroom catalog for future reference.

Correction: I don't want the junk images in my LR catalog (and there are many). There also exist temporary images that I don't want in the catalog. That includes shots taken of a featureless wall or screen that I use for sensor dust searches.

Like Dirtfarmer, I used Irfanview since the 90's. A few years back I grabbed FastStone for no particular reason. A few years after not using any of FastStones tools, just as a viewer, I started using the built in tools. It didn't take too long to figure out I preferred FastStone, it was really equal to IfranView in features I'd say, but FastStone was easier to use. It's been a couple of years since I've use IfranView.

After quite a few years of using IrfranView, I never sent him any money, but, after just a year or two of using FastStone, I liked it enough to volunteer him some cash. That's saying something for a cheap SOB like me.

Mostly I use FastStone for cropping/resizing and re-canvasing photo's, but it has a bunch of tools with the exception of layers. Generally, for editing other than the cropping/resizing stuff, I demand layers, so I always use an editor with layers (Affinity Photo or ACDSee, mostly Affinity.) I quit using PS a good while ago because I don't like their rental concept. I crop/resize all my good photos to different sizes for desktop bg, TV/cell phones, and Facebooks portal display. FastStone, IMO, can't be beat for this type of thing.

It's free! But only if you give them your Credit Card Number...

You must be going to a bogus site. There is NO credit card asked for at the official site.

There are tons of con-artists that offer freeware with some kind of catch. Always best to use the author's site.

I use IrfafanView mainly for its resizing tool, which is a breeze to use. I have used it for years, with no problems. I edit with Photoshop Elements 2018, with Topaz and Elements+ plugins.

I use both and have since the 90s. Although not as comprehensive as LR or Adobe stuff, still quite nice for the cost. One nice feature of Irfanview is the ability to edit jpgs and do a lossless save.
Good luck,
D

This is the official site, note the “Donate” tab ....

https://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm

I’ve used Faststone for a few years and for many images that require only simple tweaks, it’s the only thing I use.
