Actually children listen to everything.
They may not, however, comply with requests.
They will, on the other hand, repeat in public anything you wish they hadn't heard.

"Little pitchers have big ears." I can't remember how many times I heard my grandmother tell my grandfather when his language got a bit salty.

My parents would talk French if they didn't want me to hear what they were saying. They were both born in this country, but knew French before English.

When my oldest son was about 4 we were hurrying to get out to Church and my wife asked me to help him get dressed. He was trying to button his shirt but didn’t quite have the buttons matched up with the holes. In my frustration to fix it I inadvertently said: “you’ve got this all f....d up” and redid the buttons and off we went.
After Mass we stop to greet the priest who looked at my son and said: “you look pretty sharp!” To which my son replied: “My Daddy said I’m...” You got it🥴
