Soldier on, 2020 dutch Veterans Day.

I listen this song on a daily basis. Looking in the eyes of those veterans, trying to see what's in their mind.
Di-rect, a dutch band dedicated this song to our veterans. A song, in my ears, a beautiful song, performed for brave men and women...

I down loaded the lyrics. Not exactly what I expected.
Soldiering on woman, you're always true to form
Just keep on pushing your shopping cart through the storm
Most people buy it
But you feel it's one that we can no longer afford
You stopped believing in our story
You say it's way too short
Ain't nobody out there as brave as you
You're holdin' your own
A million different voices that are trying to break you
Just listen to one
The one that's inside you, and soldier on
You're governed by the winds that reign
You armed yourself with a flower chain and a broken cane
Nobody cares how you feel like they think your heart
Doesn't bleed the same
We wouldn't hear the truth if it cried in our faces
Ain't nobody out there as brave as you
You're holdin' your own
A million different voices that are trying to break you
Just listen to one
The one that's inside you, and soldier on
(And soldier on)
And soldier on

I thought it would be a tribute to veterans. Instead it appears to be a tribute to strong women. Nothing wrong with that, in fact I think such a tribute is long overdue. I do think it is a little disingenuous to use veterans in uniform as part of the video

I see why you might look at it that way but there are women veterans and old men do push shopping carts.

This is not 'the' music video. They performed especially for the veterans (voluntary)....and the veterans loved it.
In the beginning of the video they (the band) shared how much they appreciated their current freedom, thanks to the veterans..It is a big thing in the Netherlands. Each May the 5th a lot of ww2 veterans, especially from the US, Canada and UK, are visiting the Netherlands and they're being praised and celebrated by young and old. I See

You asked me why I was surprised. I am not criticizing the band or the song. Simply answering your question. I'm glad the Vets liked it, I did too
