Camera upgrade

I have been using a Canon 1Ds mk3 for my full frame camera and there is nothing wrong with it, I just wanted better low light performance. I think I will dedicate it to my Hasselblad lenses and the microscope I am going to order. Always wanted to get pictures of sand that look like glass. It will be a good camera for that.

I upgraded to the Canon 1Dx Mk3. Ordered it on Tuesday and paid for next day delivery, but with things as they are it took two days. No problem because it arrived in time for our planned a trip to a car museum today to test the camera out, but the weather has stranded us at home since last night, so another day for that photo op.

I can't believe how much bigger and heavier this camera is than my 1Ds. And taking a few pictures around the house I am getting excellent low light performance indoors w/o flash. It makes a difference when I can use an ISO of 18,000 vs 1200. And 20 fps sounds great in live mode, 16 fps using the viewfinder. The learning curve isn't very high so that's exciting.

This will be a game changer for sports and any low light environment. I am going to love this camera when I actually begin using it.

Yup - some people don't realize how much sensors and image processors have changed in the past 5 years. It is a new world out there. Please enjoy safely!

You have a very valid reason to upgrade. Old cameras do the job but there are specific functions like better noise control that many photographers need to address and a camera made with that purpose is the answer. Another valid reason is better AF and Nikon introduced the D500 DX format for that purpose.

Indeed there has been a significant step forward with the new sensors. Enjoy your new camera.

I am happy that you are pleased with your new equipment.
BUT, for low light, older camera's with lower megs actually do very well. Case in point, my Nikon D3s, a 12 meg camera, is still rated high on the list for low light photography, up there with the D4s and D5.
My point is, newer is not always that much better than older, less meg camera's.
But, it appears you are really taken with your new camera, I wish you luck in your future endeavors.
Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.

I have the Canon 1DS iii also and relate to your experience with low light handling (and modest fps). It's fantastic otherwise.

Will look forward to your future posts; fast action, especially in challenging light. (Pics from a Hassablad lens on 1dsiii would be interesting to see also.)

Use my 7D mii when I need 10 fps, primarily birding action.

Your 1dx iii should be the bomb.

Take a quick scan of the index in your owner's manual. Notice all the items that your new camera had on arrival. You are now carrying 3 cameras in one, the weight adds up. Enjoy the toy!

D^mn, I seldom (if ever) go above 400, a carryover from my 35mm days I suppose. I usually try to shoot at 200 at most preferably at 50 or 100. Old habits die hard! I just do it automatically, I guess. Harry PS I can't remember the last time I took a pic indoors. Probably in a theatre many years ago. I do have a few 35mm slides taken in a battery mess hall in Korea during the unpleasantness some time ago. Harry

You might want to explore the used market for microscopes. I bought Leitz, Nikon and Zeiss that way. Was looking for the rugged construction and top quality optics. Many used ones are showing up for sale from Colleges that regularly turn over their inventory.

“Rated high in the list” ? What about the real world ? Anything ?
