Hi Hoggers ... Hope all is well with you.

I have recently subscribed to the Adobe plan for Lightroom 10 and Photoshop 2011 (running release 22). I am a very experienced LR user but have decided to expand my horizon to PS. I am a beginner in this category. I recently began to search for beginner tutorials with the aim of growing to "intermediate" competency. There are about 10,000,000 listed. I am hoping someone has a recommendation for a good entry point to this lake of tutorials.

My chief interest is bird photography and I have about 12,000 photos catalogued and keyworded in LRC - (LR 10). My main interest at this time would be to use PS to crop (which I can do), sharpen, and dodge/burn specific area of a photo.

Any suggestions, especially ones based on actual experience, as to links would be appreciated. A modest price would be acceptable, but of course free is better.

All the best,

If you go to youtube.com and type key words into their search, you will find videos specific to your needs.

For example, results for "Photoshop dodge and burn" includes this 4-minute video (among many others) produced by Phlearn tutorials (I like this instructor ):

I started with PS about 10 years ago, I bought a book called Photoshop - The bible, it was thicker than a NYC phone book (for those of you who remember phonebooks) When I needed to do something and couldn't figure out how I consulted the bible, I wasn't going to READ the whole book cover to cover. This may be just me but I find when I need to do something specific, looking up a tutorial or consulting a reference book lets me apply the process immediately.
If you are just trying to manipulate an image as far as contrast, color, exposure, etc., go to Mode menu (top bar) choose Image > Adjustments > a drop down menu will appear that will allow to manipulate (adjust) different characteristics of the image. If you don't like what it does then don't save it.
Have fun!

As a longtime LrC and PS user you might find that sometimes it's better to dodge and burn in LrC, you can recolor in PS with the brush tool if there is no detail in a small blown highlight and you cannot do that in LrC. I crop in LrC as its very easy to do that and provides a lot of choices. I use PS for removal of small items, dirt, debris, branches, cleaning up water (all with the bandaid (spotting) tool and the clone tool. I also use a layer approach for sharpening. I've looked at a few videos but can't recall who and they are for very specific things. I took a class awhile ago (years back), read books, looked at a few Adobe videos, and read the Adobe Help Manual on PS. All free except the books....I also use PS for adding background layers and on occasion I try to create a composite. It's a process, a step at a time. The clone tool and spotting tool far surpass anything LrC can do.
