Looking for a recommendation for a 200-500 lens to complement my Nikkor 70-200. Camera is a Nikon D750. Someone told me that the Nikkor 5.6 would not work compatibility with the D750 which sounds strange to me.

A Nikkor 200-500mm F5.6 will work fine. Erik

Do a Google Search for "Nikon Lens Compatibility Chart" and you will find a full list of cameras and lens types. According to the list, the D750 has Full Compatibility with AF-S lenses such as the 200-500mm telezoom. I have the Nikkor 200-500 telezoom f/5.6 and use it almost daily. It's an excellent, though somewhat heavy, lens. If you check for my posts here on UHH, you will see many examples of photos taken with this lens using a crop sensor camera (D500). I have learned to use a bit faster shutter speed than I expected, especially when the subject is moving, but when you magnify anything to 500mm, any shake is going to be magnified, so the faster shutter speed helps greatly. For fairly bright daylight bird photos, I tend to shoot at 1/1600 to 1/2400 at f/5.6 to f/6.4, adjusting as needed for really bright backgrounds (where I may set Expose Compensation to +1.7 or higher, depending on circumstances). When a bird is hunkered down and sitting still, I can slow down the shutter speed and close down the aperture and still maintain fairly low noise. I think you will be fine if you want a superzoom rather than a fixed length lens of that focal length with the Nikkor 200-500. The one thing I'll say about the quality of the lens is that I've had 2 of this lens (one was stolen) and both have had a problem (fully covered by warranty) where the zoom locked up and couldn't be freed. Nikon fixed them both, but I was without the lens for a few weeks each time. I did find that my 70-200 did a fairly good job of taking photos in the interim. It was a bit sharper, which helped compensate for the lower focal distance.

I think you will like the 200-500 very much if that's what you choose. I know that I have.

The 200-500 is out of stock pretty much everywhere right now. Great lens.

I’m not a Nikon shooter but yes that is a nice lens it is a shame that a lot of stores don’t have it. You probably already know this but stay away from Abe’s Of Maine!!

I use the Sigma 150-600 lens on my D750 and D5000, I have not tried it on the D200. Great lens, it is the only non-Nikon lens i own.

If you cannot get a 200-500 from Nikon you might consider the Tamron 150-600 G2. I like them both.

Nikon 200-500 works awesome on my D750. Excellent lens, a little heavy but excellent. So much so that my 24-120 and 200-500 have pushed my 70-200 to the curb.

If you're having an issue in finding the lens, there are other major retailers in different parts of the country besides New York...Try Procam.com based out of Chicago/Detroit. They had 3 500 f/5.6 when New York had them on back order for months. Also Roberts Camera is anothert good place to try

If you want to mostly shoot handheld, weight may be an issue. I call my D750 with the 70-300 lens a "tank." Heavy. I do not use a neck strap when going out with the tank. I have a binoculars strap the shifts the weight from my neck to my shoulders. Something to consider, how you're going to carry this heavy body with a heavy lens.

Call Hunts Photo and Video and ask them to put your name on their waiting list for the Nikon 200-500mm lens. You might want to do the same at B&H Photo too.

If you want to consider a prime lens, think about the Nikon 500mm f5.6 pf lens. It is an amazing lens and good value too.
