R5 focus verdict

For those who remember I was having a heck of a time with my R5 and my 100-400II with and with out the 1.4III extender. I could not get it to focus where I wanted and I felt they were quite soft. In comparisons my 5D4 blew it away. I then had a white streak show up in the photos. It went back to Canon and yea, I was not crazy.

This is an update e-mail from Mike at Canon: It is the adapter that is currently in QC inspection. The body is currently undergoing extended testing. Now with the adapter it was found that mount assembly was out of range causing the focus to be inaccurate . So he replaced the mount and made adjustments. Next he will be continuing with the R5. The white streak was due to a gap in the shutter. He will be replacing he shutter and then doing adjustments to the camera. Once he is done with that he will be testing the two together and making sure focus is accurate. Once completed and shipped you should be seeing both units early to mid next week.

I rather thought the streak would be a defect issue, but I was sooo afraid they would say they could not find a focus issue and it must be me or the lens or, or, or, or......
I really hope when it comes back I will be able to get the quality of photos everyone else seems to get with the 100-400 on the R5!

I so wanted to like the R5 and want to keep it! I just wish I had not spent a month and 3,000 photos trying and trying to figure out what I was doing wrong.....

Sound like it will be a new outfit when you do get it back. I had a lens a few years ago and I was convinced the problem was me. I was pleased when that wasn’t the case so I know how you felt.

Good to know that Canon is getting things fixed, although I would have probably asked for a replacement after all of the hassle you went through.

I agree - sounds like you got a lemon.... they should have replaced it.

When you get it back working, you will love it. Sorry for the lost opportunities and the frustrations.

I did, but they fixed and replaced instead. Someone said maybe this is better because now this body has been tested to be sure everything is focusing correctly! A new one could have come to me with different problems....

I know, people were very nice with help suggestions like on a tripod, single shot, no servo etc. I kept thinking, but if that is what it takes to get a good sharp photo, I don’t want this because I will not always be in perfect conditions! I was ready to go back to my 5D4! So yes, I’m glad there was a fixable problem besides me! I didn’t think I could be getting it soooo wrong!

That is true. Hope they finally iron out all of the issues, it is supposed to be a great camera.

I have the R5 and the lens you mentioned. Should I be concerned? I haven’t used the two together but if I have the same issue should I have the Canon maintenance agreement in place?

We are all working with equipment that is at the forefront of camera technology. Last year, the SONY A7R4 was the "ultimate" camera, this month/year, it is the Canon R5. During that interval, I bought a SONY A7R4 and a drawer full of lenses. No point in bemoaning my choice. In that period of time, I learned a lot about how to use my new camera, took several pictures that elicited compliments (and learned that there is no shame in throwing away the bad pix), and had any number of great days in the bird marshes. Had I still been reading reviews while waiting for the new "ultimate" camera, I would have missed all that.
New high tech devices are vulnerable. The important point is that you now have a unit that has benefitted from a factory re-alignment. And you can enjoy the fact that the R5 might be better than last year's SONY. Have fun shooting.

This was all covered under warranty right now. I don’t know how often there is a bad adaptor out there. I obviously got a bad one, but so many people are getting great results with the 100-400II with and with out the extender that I think most adaptors are good! That is why I was so frustrated, I knew I could get a sharp photo with my 5D4, I would then use as close to the same settings with the R5 on a tripod and it was bad. Everyone kept saying it was user error, such a complicated new body, must use higher shutter speed etc. I tried it all and no luck. I did not really think I was that incompetent and then when I finally noticed the white streak issue (totally a defect in the shutter) Canon said send it in. I sent the adaptor also and said I am having focus issues, please check that out also, they did and sure enough a defect in the adaptor mount.

After saying all that, I think 99% of adaptors are just fine, I just got one with a defective mount that affected the focus. And my white streak was obviously a shutter defect from the factory! Lucky me!

Yes, at first I thought I wanted them to replace since I felt the body not only had the streak issue but a focus issue. Now I know it has been totally tested and adjusted for focus! I almost did not send in the adaptor, but at the last minute decided to and boy am I glad I did! Otherwise they would have told me focus is fine and I would have put the adaptor back on and still had problems!
