There's a vast difference between a DSLR and a mirrorless, one isn't even an acronym.

If already have Nikon, Olympus, Sony, or Canon lenses then you could stick with that brand and just get an adapter for your current lenses to fit on the new mirrorless camera. You can save money that way and then slowly build mirrorless lenses as you go.
WHERE DID YOU READ, SEE, HEAR, NIKON WAS NO MORE. FAKE NEWS, REALLY FAKE NEWS.
Nikon is a scientific company, they produce lots of products, including camera's. They are not going anywhere. I really wish the talking heads here would pay more attention to photography and not spread untrue, hurtful, and false rumors about a great company.

Get a Nikon Z7II system; ( or wait a bit for the Z9), you'll wear out before it does...

Don’t worry about it. You admit to being a hobbyist. Corporate finance is not your concern. Maintain all four. Update and expand all your systems whenever the budget permits. Don’t “play favorites”. Keep all four as up-to-date as possible.

Up-to-date means “reasonably current”. No need for “cutting edge, state of the art”. Be reasonable. Never be the early adopter but neither be the curmudgeon with truly outdated gear. After all, it’s only a hobby !!!

You ask about a single-brand enhanced learning experience. If that attracts you, I’d recommend your Olympus system. Both m4/3 brands offer many advanced performance features not available in larger cameras. That will give you plenty of learning experience. Also, expanding an m4/3 system is least demanding in terms of space, weight, and cost.
Don’t worry about it. You admit to being a hobbyis... (show quote)

I second this suggestion!

The EOS R5 will change how we think about mirrorless, how we think about photography, how we think about life.

I’m sure that the R5 is a great camera. I have always been loyal to Canon since the AE-1. I also bought my EOS 2000 twenty years ago. Then 8 years ago I went digital with the 5D Mark II. I recently picked up the Mark IV.

While Mirrorless is the way to go, I’m happy where I am. Besides I cannot justify an R5 to my wallet and my eye. I have been so used to my mirrored “joints” I won’t buy a mirrorless for a while.

For example:
I have a great dog who is great company, quite lively, playful and friendly. He also snores when he sleeps and barks incessantly at the neighbor’s dog across the way through the fence.
But because he snores and barks very loudly, I won’t trade him in for a quieter model.

Sometimes it is better to let a sleeping dog lay!!

I bet if I started with a Nikon FE I probably would be upset about the company moving.

My loyalty is at my fingertips.

You dont mention which bodies you have or what glass but I think you posed the right question, you would be better to stick to one or at most two brands, it just makes the camera operation much more effortless. Doesn’t sound like you have a preference. You can get adapters for Sony e-mount to take Canon and Nikon lenses, or for Canon to use Nikon. And you can sell some of the old equipment for new lenses or an updated body, so more toys for the same investment. Sony is the least intuitive to operate but until recently was IMO the most advanced technically. This forum is always somewhat partisan- we love our cameras- but with more info will give you good suggestions.

If I read your title and post correctly you have owned those four cameras for four years. When deciding on which one to stick with rather than learn all four which one do you enjoy using the best. Which one do you have more lenses to use, which is lighter IF weight is a consideration. Each brand these days is awesome when you stick to the middle to high end of the product line. As for Nikon going out of business, they have slowed down some and are now having their products, all or some, made in different countries. Still Nikon though as far as I know.
