Sure sounds like phishing scam to me.
I don't do business on Ebay but that smells like 3 day old phish to me.

The USPS has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with what a company posts on their website....
Whether they have it in stock or not.
(Guess ya gotta blame it on somebody though.)

Another change: Even if you buy from an individual (who has already paid a sales tax) you will have to pay a sales tax. I bought the Nikon Z-6 and the tax was about $200.00.

Did you contact eBay direct? Not through the message or a phone # in the message? That sounds like someone trying to get your info to gain access to your account(s) so they can rip you off. If your email app shows full return addresses you may find it came from some funky email address
Great advice Robert.
It sounds like "phishing" to me.
I don't even look at ebay, having been screwed once on a major purchase. Fool me once ...

Today received an email detailing changes how payments to sellers are handled. I will not sell on eBay any longer. First they require I give them my social security number. They will no longer pay the seller through their PayPal account. Instead eBay will deduct all fees from the amount distributed and then pay the balance directly into the seller's specified bank account - NO LONGER TO A PAYPAL ACCOUNT. NO THANKS. I LIKED KEEP MY SELLER FUNDS SEPARATE FROM OUR HOUSEHOLD ACCOUNT. Final value fees have increased ostensibly to compensate for no longer getting PayPal fees, but in the process I'm sure they are going to make more money through a series of other changes which are not readily apparent to the seller. I'm done with eBay for good. They continue to make changes only to their own benefit. I will continue to buy on eBay but not sell.

Thanks for the info. I wonder what their excuse is for wanting SS numbers? We are told to protect that bit of information, so I wonder what right these companies have in asking for SS#? I had thought about selling
a lot of stuff on eBay, but after reading your post, I think not.

This increase only benefits ebay, not the seller or the buyer.
Changes never benefit the buyer or the seller.
Has anyone else received this mysterious request for SSN from eBay?
I have active items on eBay at the moment and have received no such request, and no indication of any changes with respect to PayPal.
Sounds like a VERY smelly phish to me, that only one person has received?

I think you should play it safe and post your SSN on the items you have for sale.
eBay is not going to get my SSN. I can live with eBay.

This is what I received by email Jan 12 from eBay.
If you hit "reply to" (and whatever you do, don't actually send a reply!) what is shown as the email address that you would be replying to?
I'd bet quite a lot of money that this is completely bogus, especially since eBay owns PayPal. They operate separately with their own charging schemes, and thus effectively get to charge you more.
It is too bad that civil discussion at the national level can not be held on things like this. You can have a government regulated/controlled economy (True socialism), or total free economy (Lassez Faire) or something in between (wide range of options). But today your called a communist by mainly just for talking some change to balance things. Mayors scream about closing, unprofitable hospitals, but do not want to force people to have health insurance, we all find walls around paying taxes, but want unemployment, roads, etc. Now we want to be able to get health insurance went we need it, why not do that for auto (after the accident), etc.
As to China, I worked for the USDA when the government decided to support small and minority businesses. We found one such company consisted of an office, phone and person, who purchased items from other companies and had them sent to us, just an added middle man. Many think all government workers care nothing about money, but we had research to do and standards to meet and limited buggets, pay 10% more for things = less research, etc.
WEB companies got a free ride on taxes for way too long, destroying physical stores, jobs and state bugets, but it was not illegal and many never made profits until bought out. Look at Testla, just made their first profits and he's now the richest person on earth, company worth more than GM, Ford and others combined I hear.
I have come the conclusion, that while things may be slowly improving, talking over 100 hrs of so, most of the economic and social problems we have are due to trying to cheat the grim reaper on things like taxes. You can only demand what is not possible for so long the Federal and State debts will either end this country or result in true socialist or both. You can say what you will about state's rights, but if NY and CA go bunkrupt, it won't be just their problem.
DEFINITELY not eBay!
