What a great find. Definitely a great invitation by the ranch owner. Just wonder what these old buildings could say about their occupants -- only if they could talk. Great photos. Mahalo for sharing.

Made a quick trip up to Wyoming this past Saturday to fetch a Power Ball lotto ticket...and an excuse to do some photography. These old structures are part of a working ranch and back in the hills a ways behind locked gates. I happened to drive by as the rancher and a couple of his teen age sons were taking a wagon load of hay to feed his cattle. He invited me in to photo these old structures that have been on my list for quite some time. As you can see by looking on the ground, the main occupants these days are the cattle...you had to be careful where you walked!

great shots of those old structures, jederick...it was meant to be and excellent timing...one more thing to mark off your list!

A beautifully photographed set Jim and congrats on your timing! These are some complex, substantial and interesting buildings. The second shot may be of shop or work area. The clearstory windows above the door is unusual and in the first shot that building looks like it had a shad roof. The building on the left in the first shot is skillfully done. Good eye, always a treat to tag along!

I agree with exakta56, that seems to be a hit n miss engine, they usually could be dragged around on wheels some times and were used to run various equipment with a belt drive.
They were small but relatively heavy and had a surrounding water jacket that was just filled from a local hose or water tank to maintain cooling, They had a pretty neat sound when they were running, hence the name. It was a pretty simple device.

Thank you Bushpilot and I looked up "hit n miss" engines and that is exactly what this is. They were used for a variety of purposes on farms/ranches or wherever and were kinda indispensable once you used one.

The last shot is a motor part that drove a cotton strap link to another old machine...perhaps for harvesting.

Thanks boncrayon...you are correct and their nickname was "hit n miss"...used for a variety of applications on a ranch/farm like pumping irrigation water!!

It is an old one cylinder motor that probably powered a pump.

Agree with that observation, Bruce and they were called a "hit n miss" engine like you hear on one cyclinder (lung) engines. Had to look it up and thank you Wikipedia!!

The stories these old buildings could tell!?

The single banger in the last image is still used on oil pumping units where power is not available. They run forever!!

It would be fun to listen to their stories. I'm finding out more about this hunk of metal than I knew existed...they had a lot of applications and names!!

Many thanks for your comments and observations, Phil. Wish the rancher had time to visit as some of the history may have been available. This was the first I've seen clearstory windows spanning like these did. And, I'm always happy to see you're tagging along and appreciate your insights!!
