A question for BBF'rs

Not sure I’m describing this right but I’ll give it a try. On my D7200, when I release the button to lock-in focus and then recompose before pressing the shutter, does the exposure stay set on the point in time before I recomposed and released the BBF button or does it expose for the recomposed scene when I press the shutter button? Another way to look at it is whether or not the AF-AE BBF button also locks in exposure.

If you're not shooting fully manual then the exposure will change when the shutter is pressed. BBF only affects focusing.

Exposure is not locked, only focus.. when you recompose it uses that reading for exposure

I use BBF on my D7500 and programmed the Fn1 button (just beneath the shutter button near the lens mount) to handle AEL function. On the D7200, that button is labelled Pv. Perhaps you could re-program the Pv button to handle AEL?

That sounds like the solution. I’ll check it out. Thank you and the others for clarifying this for me. I kinda figured that exposure wasn’t locked but I wasn’t sure.

I'm not familiar with the D7200, so maybe I shouldn't comment. I have my D5300 set up for back-button focus. All it does is take the focus function off the shutter button. Metering activation remains with the shutter button and half-press locks the exposure.

The same for EOS cameras.

Steve from Backcountry Gallery has a book on the Nikon focus system. I love it and it is easy to understand and has helped me greatly. Also one on Nikon metering.

You are correct, the focus is locked at the distance (in manual),IF you have also removed focus from shutter. Exposure is not locked. Only focus. When you recompose, the exposure will re do.

Exactly what I have done on a D7200, except I reprogrammed AE-L to the Fn button, just below the lens on the right.

If by BBF you mean you are using the AE-L/AF-L to acquire focus, then how you set the Custom Menu setting F4 will determine the behavior of the button. You can have it lock exposure and/or focus.

This article is Canon centric but it explains how the various settings impact exposure and autofocus in the shutter and the back button in Canon cameras.

I set my D7200 up when birding as follows- Pv= Spot Meter. FN= Group AF. Holding the BBF, Pv and FN buttons down while engaging the shutter release is interesting for those of us with arthritis, but works really well, especially changing light conditions. Alternately one could map the FN button to Spot meter and set the camera toGroup AF removing the difficult for me Pv button altogether. Good luck!
