Nikon D7500 mode dial unlock button problem

I've been looking to upgrade from my D5600. I found a good deal on a slightly used D7500, bought in 2019, shutter count is only 3,500. It is in practically mint condition. I made a deal with the seller to let me try it out for a couple days to make sure all was well.

I found that when using the Mode dial, the unlock button in the center of the dial has no effect. The dial rotates whether the button is depressed or not (the button springs back up when depressed). It turns smoothly in both directions and functions properly, changing to the different modes correctly. The shutter release mode dial below it works fine as well, and the button that unlocks it works.

Otherwise the camera looks to be perfect. Coming from the D5600 where the Mode dial doesn't lock, this actually doesn't feel strange to me. Any others having this problem? Is it something to worry about? At this point, I'm leaning towards keeping the camera. Thanks for all replies.

I have a D7500. Sounds like the mechanism is stuck or broken on the D7500 you plan to buy. I wonder if the owner forced it to rotate without depressing the lock button.

I dislike those locks and would instinctively welcome one that didn't work. LOL. BUT, it may be a harbinger of unseen damage, a future problem lurking with that dial. I'd return it, or try to negotiate a deep discount.

I think so also. If there are any broken pieces from the locking mechanism inside, it could cause an issue at some point.

Exact same dial on 7100/7200 cameras. If all dial settings activate the proper function, and you do not find that you accidentally move the setting during use, I would use it as a price negotiation. I would expect that you could get a repair cost quote from Nikon? At least the parts should be readily available for many years since the dial is used on numerous popular cameras. Boris

Thanks for the replies. Good comments and I was thinking in a similar way. The deal came with a couple Nikon kit lenses, I got the price to $1000 Cdn. I may even try selling off the lenses for $300, net camera price around $700, which for my friends south of the order... around $550 US. At that price I figured it was worth it, especially with the very low shutter count. And that mode dial continues to turn very smoothly... so far so good!
