Something similar happened to me, sorta similar anyway.
About 6 yrs ago i got an angry message from someone on facebook asking why i had not sent them the lens i sold them. I had no idea what they where talking about, so after a lot of investigation my wife and i found our facebook account AND our paypal accounts had been hacked and someone had sold a canon lens to about 15 different people. Our paypal account showed over $11,000.00 in transactions over just 3 days. We of course reported it to both facebook and paypal (all the money had been drawn out within minutes of each transaction.) They both found in our favor. We closed those accounts.
5 yrs later i was attacked on facebook claiming i had ripped them off a few yrs ago and they wanted there money back. After explaining it all to him he did not believe it, (not sure i would have either). Anyway he wound up being the guy that started it all yrs earlier. After much investigation by paypal facebook and the local Portland police, this guy was tracked down, we where informed just last month he had been found and arrested. From what we where told he had over a dozen other scams he stole over $75,000. And he was broke again so he was going back through facebook finding the people that he had hacked trying to strongarm them into paying him.
Crazy a** people out there.

I’m sorry that happened to you! It is too bad there are so many dishonest and mean people in the world. Also a heads up to keep an eye on our PayPal account!!!

PhotoLady, I do understand your angst, and I am sorry this happened to you. Did the accuser give any indication as to whom it might belong if not to you? Or could he mention an issue of NG where the image was published? Actually, I would be interested in that information, once I got over my original anger.

Thank you! They said something about why do others names show up. I can only assume they were referring to the people I tagged when posting the photo. These were others on the trip with me. It is funny though when I see one of the other people who were on the same trip post a photo and it is like hey, looks just like mine! I know we were in the same vehicle that day!! In fact our pro photographer who was on the trip said she had a bucket list photo that she finally got of a lion backlit with the breath while roaring on a specific rock formation. Anyway, there were others at the same location and she is like damn if one of the other pros did not get the same photo and her first thought was hey that is mine till she remembered he was right next to her....
Oh well, all the kind words here have made me feel better!

Exactly!!! Example, big photo target near me, KSC - Vehicle Assembly Building or VAB.... one of largest buildings in the world (it's HUGE, had it's own inside weather issues in the early days) no one who works there, or tours there, or lives within a few miles of it, doesn't come away with a pic, heck you can take a photo of it from Titusville, or the Port, Cocoa Beach, if you are above the tree line..it is like that for any point of interest/monuments/lakes/buildings/canyons, yadda, yadda yadda. Hmmm, Mount Rushmore comes to mind, Empire State Building, Grand Canyon, etc. etc.

Ignoring them is probably best, or simply tell them to look at the Exif data (set up your camera to tag your pics with name, or whatever, watermark), although that may not transfer to social media.

That is what I am wondering, if they were to pull the photo from Instagram, will the info be there? I don’t know how to pull a photo using my IPad, but then I’m not real technical either....can do it from my computer! Thanks!

Yea, I have found with very difficult people ignoring or taking their unkind words and turning it into something nice they did not intend shuts them right up. Brings to mind a person I used to work with.....🙄

Thankfully this is a first for me! However, I’m about to leave another as I am tired of all the hate being put out...

Not like only one or two people may have stood where you did to take images.
Take any popular place. How many images taken there in a year look almost identical?

Exactly. I often see photos that look vertually identical shot from the same spot at the same location. I have even seen even a pair of Buddy Guy playing the same pokadot guitar at the same show as mine - as the other photographer was shoulder to shoulder to me apparently.

Wow, just had an upsetting situation happen on Instagram. I made a comment on a non photography post on Instagram and someone must have gone to my page, or what ever you call it, and looked at my photos. They then went on to say that many of the photos were not mine! They even said they had seen one on Nat Geo and was not mine and I was not giving credit! I responded to this person saying they were certainly all mine and the response back was there is no watermark and why do others names show up? Then proceeded to ask if I worked for Nat Geo.... I can only assume the other names they referred to are the people I tagged who were on the trip with me and I do not use a watermark, as many on Instagram do not.

This just really upsets me to be accused of claiming someone else’s photo! I did once again reply that I guaranteed that 1,000% they are all my photos and I was honored they thought my photos were Nat Geo worthy....

Good answer. And if they bother you again block them. Glad I never have had such a thing happen. I shoot a lot of flower close-ups and even the flowers in my yard look essentially the same as any other of that same species. I have even seen flower images on the UHH that like one of mine. Many time after getting images on to my computer I confuse images I took from my wife's.

You have the right idea. I am waiting for someone to accuse one of my images to be by Edward Weston. My bell peppers never look like his.

I had this happen years ago on another forum. Someone denied my personal and professional credentials.

Your response is a good one, but they are what is called a troll, and here’s how it can play out:

You respond in a manner that they deem inappropriate (doesn’t matter how it starts).

They contact Instagram or your ISP and claim that you violated the terms of your agreement.

You get terminated from the service, no appeal.

DO NOT continue to engage. You might consider contacting Instagram and tell them you are being trolled. Let them handle it.

Yes...there are people who do these things for fun. They need something better in their lives.

Is this the reason that many do not post pics on UHH and only troll. I have had several ask me about using my photos and I’ve allowed them to unless for profit
