I have 4 lenses that I regularly use. 240-120 f4 that came with my D750, I then added a Tamron 150-600 G2 for wildlife, then the Nikon 70-200 f2.8E for the low-light / shallow dof, then the 14-24 f2.8g for landscape, next on the want list is a macro lens near 100mm. Maybe someday I will get a monster telephoto (600 or 800 prime)
Do I "need" all these lenses?...No, but the reason I go to work is first, to feed myself, second to be able to keep a home, third, to get the things I enjoy. As long as the third doesn't interfere with the first two, why not?

It's a hobby, love photography and love collecting the gear - probably 50-60 lenses/bodies (equipment junkie according to my better half), use all of it all the time, no, use them when I want to - yes, buy/sell/trade when I want to. Used to have a lot of off-road vehicles (dirt bikes/Quads/side by sides/Jeeps), only two Jeeps now - nowhere to run them offroad w/o traveling farther than I want - too many people in Florida now, not much open land!! Hot Rods & Motorbikes, been there too, Ham Radio, yep.... Radio Control, Musical Instruments, yep. Worked all my life till I retired, enjoyed my hobbies all my life.... and why not? Need another room for my gear, good thing the kids are grown and gone!!! My biggest problem is letting them go when not used anymore...running out of room, or no longer using helps those decisions. I have many I used decades ago, and they are like old friends, as another here said.

Some folks collect/use/love their Surf Boards, Guns, Fishing Gear, Boats, Jewelery, Handbags, Shoes, etc. etc. No harm, no foul, unless buying toys takes the mortgage/grocery/rent/bill money.....

Do what you like/like what you do.....walk the good path, harm no one lest they earn it, try to enjoy your time here on earth.....

To answer your question as to how many I own, as many as I need.

Why is it that photographers are obsessed with obtaining so many lenses? I only have 3 lenses that serve me well. I have owned them now for about 8-10 years during which I have bought 4 new bodies. My lenses are the Canon 10-22mm efs, the 24-105mm L EF, and the 100-300mm EF. During the time i have owned these lenses I have owned the Canon XT, the 60d, 70d and now the 90d bodies. But I have never had a desire to buy new lenses. Why would I? My 24-105 is my general purpose lens. I use it for 75% or more of my shots. The 10-22 is for when I have to go wide and the 100-300 is for sports, wildlife and general telephoto needs. I cannot imagine needing anything else other than maybe a 50mm prime with a large aperture. I don’t have a camera bag big enough for anymore lenses.

Along those lines, my wife insists that you can never have too many knitting needles, because when you need something specific, you need it NOW.

At least they aren't shoes or dresses.

To me, lenses, like bodies, are tools to get the shot(s) I want/need. If I only shot football, I might only own my 400/2.8 and my 70-200/2.8. Since i shoot most any sports inside and outside, under the lights, I also need other lenses. As I age, I appreciate lighter weight, so I have some slower duplicates I use when I want to go lighter including a mirrorless body and a couple of native mirrorless lenses. Truth is, I don't know, on the top of my head, exactly how many lenses I own at the moment. Does "a lot" work?

I agree with you 100%. I have a Tamron 28-300 on my 5D and a Tamron 150-600 plus a 11-24 Canon which is my go to lenses. I have a fun other lenses that I really use and wonder why I bought them.

Similar conversation with a friend many years ago. I asked him how many guns he owned. He said, ‘More than I need, less than I want’.

A short time later he razzed me about contributing more to society. He asked how much money I had. I said, ‘Nick, it’s like you and your guns; more than I need, less than I want’.

I have 4 lenses ready to go, 24-85, 70-300, 200-500, plus an old 105 micro. I have a 28 in storage somewhere.

I own six lenses and they all serve a purpose. Coverage extends from 15mm to 600mm when including the 26mp crop setting which I use routinely. There is some duplication to allow for greater light gathering and often becomes necessary.

More than a few, however, each to their own I say. I am glad you are happy with your selection taxslave.

Cheers!
