True, but aren't the opinions of others who may have experience with this equipment part of research? Sometimes other opinions will cause you to consider things you haven't thought of yourself

I like your answer. Some of the answers on this forum are intimidating and downright rude. There are those of us with little knowledge or experience in photography. I learn a lot just by reading all of the daily comments but am leery of asking a question that could get me a few "cutting" responses.

Please do not tell me to put my big boy pants on and take it like a man. There is no excuse for being rude on a forum that is set up to assist us in our hobby.

JUST SAYIN'

There is nothing wrong with asking others opinions and experiance as part of research before buying.
If you can't contribute to the OP's question then don't say anything just pass on to the next topic.

Self-reliance is a contribution. Do your own research make up your own mind.

Research is nothing more than other peoples opinions and experiances.
ie. DP Review is nothing more than their opinion, other review sites have slightly different views on the same equipment.
So asking others on a forum such as this is just an other way of research.

Research is your evaluation of a variety of different beliefs/research. Then it's up to you to make your decesion. Asking here will get you the responder's prejudices.

I have a D500, a D810 (and D800), and a Z7. The Z cameras do not autofocus fast enough for wildlife shooting. I use the D500 for wildlife and the 810 and Z for non-moving objects, nature and landscape. Read up on the Z7II before you consider it for wildlife. The additional problem when having only a dSLR and a Z camera is that you don't have a good back-up wildlife camera if the dSLR goes out. I'm hoping the D810 works for that, it replaced the D800 (things were going wrong) and I bought it from a friend used so not very expensive. The 800s shoot sooooo slow once you have a 500.

You raise an interesting point about ensuring that the second body (other than the D500) at least have sufficient « wildlife » AF capability to stand in for the D500 if needed. And, I infer from your comments that the Z7 does not meet that standard. If that is a major concern, it seems to me to point to the D850 as the body to get, pending reliable evaluations of the Z7II.

If you didn't seek the opinions of others, you wouldn't know anything. Every review you read is just somebody's opinion based on their use.

Maybe you depend on:

Any review will give you the responder’s prejudices. The key with any review, whether it be from users on here or from a publication is to get beyond the reviewer’s conclusion and ferret out the reasons for that conclusion. The value in any review is being able to gain understanding the reasons somebody liked or didn’t like something and determining how that information fits with your needs.

You said you had a Z6 and liked it. Although you didn't say what lenses you were using on the Z6, it seemed to be the AF-S lenses. I have been using my Z6 for landscapes for about a year now and the f4 S lenses (14-30 and 24-70) are outstanding for landscapes. My suggestion is to buy them and forget about the D850 or Z7. Buy from KEH and save even more. Megapixels are over rated for many purposes, and if you really need them, just bring out your D810.

Thanks. I have plenty of lenses, all F mount, that I use with the adaptor fro the Z series.

Maybe your GAS money would be better spent on Z series lenses?

I am looking at the same decision. I have primarily shot wildlife, using a D500. Purchased a well-used D810 a while ago to test the FF waters. Love the high resolution, but feel that the D810 is old technology. So, since neither the D850 nor the Z7II will replace the D500, the choice for me to get high resolution in a more up-to-date body is the Z7II, or even a used Z7.

I went with the D850 to compliment my D500. I shoot wildlife mostly, getting into landscapes as well. D850 may be the best all around camera especially for those of us who shoot a variety of subjects. D500 with the 500pF attached balances better for me especially BIF shots. High frame rate is nice on the D500, too. D850 IQ is tops, though and the low-light capabilities and the 47 mp sensor are welcome.

Thanks Bob. That is where I am leaning. I loved the 810 and have some older lenses that won't autofocus with the Z series.

I'm looking to upgrade my older D810 to either the D850 or Z7ii and would like some advice and opinions. I have a Z6, which is a great camera and works well with my lenses and the lens adaptor. The two cameras are pretty comparable, with a few exceptions like number of shots per battery charge and the mirror/mirrorless aspect. I mainly shoot landscape, rivers and people.

Sell the 810 and get some S lenses for the Z - they are significantly BETTER than the old F mount lenses. - if you are serious about landscapes....or, anything.
