My Mac has iTunes, of course, but it doesn't like any password I enter for iTunes. The icon keeps popping up asking me to sign in. Clicking on Cancel doesn't cancel anything. It just keeps popping up while I'm trying to do something. Clicking on Quit doesn't help, either. Any ideas?

iTunes has been replaced by Music. When I open it, I am not asked for a password. I would try Apple support.

What version of MacOs are you running?
With Catalina, iTunes has been replaced, as JohnSwanda said. The iTunes app is now Apple Music app, Apple TV app and Apple Podcasts app.
If you're still running Mojave or earlier, you may need to update your version of iTunes. See
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201352
To log in, try using your Apple ID and Password as jaymatt suggested.
If you're running Catalina or Big Sur, use the Music app.

You have to use your Apple ID & password as far as I know. I don't need to to listen to music or upload music I already own , just to purchase. I am on a PC but that shouldn't make a difference?

Actually, whether or not iTunes works, it does make a difference.
iTunes was subdivided into Music, Apple TV and Apple Podcasts for Mac users beginning with Catalina and continuing with Big Sur.
However, iTunes still works for iOS (iPhone/iPad) and still works for Windows users.
In any case, iTunes does require Apple User ID (usually your email address) and Apple Password.

Call Apple support. I know, it's a hassle, but they can help.

I use a password to get the computer running, but iTunes doesn't accept that.

Doesn't it have to actually be running to Force Quit? I right-click and Quit, but it keeps popping up. By that, I mean it keeps bouncing up like a ball from the Dock.

The password required for iTunes is your Apple Password, not the password you use to start your computer.

To force quit, either two-finger the iTunes icon in the task bar at the bottom of your screen and then click "force quit", or click the apple icon in the upper left hand corner of your screen, select "force quit" and then click iTunes from the list of running applications.

Does anyone else see the irony in "and it still works for Windows users?"
