I do not leave a camera in my car; I would worry about the heat effect on the camera in the summer and the cold effect on the battery in the winter. It takes little effort to carry a small point & shoot camera in and out with you, in a pocket, purse, or belt pouch. If even that is too much, you still should have a cell phone camera. Personally, I carry a little Lumix ZS100 either in my coat pocket or in a belt pouch; DSLRs just sit in a drawer at home unless I have a particular reason to take one of them.

Look for a beater, something used that you wouldn't care if it got damaged or stolen.
Don't leave in plain sight or you will have to pay for a broken window.

I always carry a camera with me. Since 1960’s. Have found that an small old ice chest draws little attention, and is not worth a thief’s effort. Camera body wide angle prime and a medium zoom. On the floor in the back seat. Old towel or blanket on top. The less precise, the better. Like thrown in junk.

...I do it all the time, usually taking the camera with me when exiting for periods of time, but often just putting it tucked-into the driver's side seat on the floor. I've been ripped off for tools before, so have some experience...lol.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts and comments. I will have to just treat it like my purse and take it in and out all the time I think. Have missed some good pics not having it with me

I keep a Sony a6000 in my console at all times when I am not using it. No problems.

I can't help with first hand info but OI know people that keep a GoPro facing out the front window in the car and going when the car is on. You might want to look a car cameras.

Along with the other DSLRs, I also have a Nikon A900. Fits in me pocket.
I also have a few "disposable" cameras, just in case; one always lives in my glove compartment.

I keep an inexpensive P&S in the car all the time. It's in an insulalted bag wrpped in bubbly stuff. Biggest proble has been remembering to change the batteries now and then. Now-a-days I'm not using it much because of the cell phone camera. Christmas was good I got a Pro-12 phone all the bells & whistles included.

I've had two camera kits stolen from my car: a Leica IIIf with two lenses, and a Nikon F with one lens. I carry it with me in my camera bag (a relatively small backpack), but I take it with me when I stop at a gas station and go in to use the facilities!

I carry a Sony Rx100 with me, in my pocket.
Never leave a camera in a car, heat and cold and moisture and dirt are its enemies. Thieves are your enemy.
Have fun!

I lived in a low crime area, still do, but different one, and was not much worried. I had put some firearms in the truck to go hunting and put my camera backpack with 6 mo old Nikon D200 and 1 mo old Nikon 17-55 f/2.8 in the truck. Went back into the house for a restroom stop. Came back out in less than 8 minutes, to find the drivers window smashed and everything gone.

I know who took everything, a neighbor, because he had been friendly for years and after the truck was broken into he wouldn't look at me much less say more than hello for over 3 years. The police won't act on suspicion, unless it is their suspicion.

I say, if you get out of your vehicle take your camera with you. NEVER leave anything of value in your vehicle.

Once burned twice shy!

I keep my car camera in an insulated lunch bag. On hot summer days I keep the bag in an empty food cooler, much like you would do to insulate groceries.

On cooler days I wrap the bag in an extra jacket (in case I need it!) and on hotter days I wrap it in towels.

And lock my car when I leave it!

Of course, I take everything (camera, handbag, etc) out of the car overnight. Just sayin

Don't misunderstand me, but I think the best thing to do to remedy your dilemma is to buy a smart phone with a
good camera. That way you'll never leave home (or your car) without it. Might sacrifice a few pixels and sharpness, but it would solve your problem of worrying about the camera being fried or frozen in the car.
