I found that my Iphone takes pictures as good as my Nikon. I only look at them on my PC.

Years ago I head that the “best camera” is the one you have with you. Now that camera is always with me. And it makes phone calls too !

Leaving the camera in the car isn't a good idea, mainly because of weather extremes. There are lots of small, inexpensive cameras available. I have an older small Sony and a small Canon Elph that easily fit into a pocket. If I carried a pocketbook, I'd have a small camera in it. Of course, there is always your cell phone.

It's kind of funny to me that cameras are affected by temperature and have to be pampered like premature babies. But at the same time, the electronics in our vehicles keep working in those same conditions. There are specific circumstances that do affect a camera a bit different (transitioning from cold/dry conditions to hot/humid) that may render the camera less effective for a bit. And while I don't make it a practice to store camera equipment for long periods in my truck, during the warmer more humid months here in Florida, I will put them in the vehicle for a couple hours before I go out so the equipment has time to acclimate to those conditions to prevent fogging when I want to use it.

Theft is always a possibility, and in some areas it probably isn't wise to leave anything of value in a vehicle. Luckily I live in an area where that isn't really an issue that I need to worry about.

I hard boiled an egg on my dash in Jakarta once, just to prove I could.

You may encounter situations where the outside humidity is high and your car's A/C is on. When you take your camera outside there may be fog or condensation on the lens. This is not harmful but will stop picture taking until lens warms up. The responses of others here are all valid.

Have an ice chest in my truck behind the drivers seat, (without the ice.). Keeps my camera protected all day in the heat or cold.

I used to keep a P&S Canon G11 (Great Camera) in my truck until a thief decided he needed it more than me.I no longer do that.

I often bring a Canon G1x iii with me. When out of the car, I either have it with me or leave it in the center console or under the driver’s seat. Even on the warmest days in the Colorado summer, it’s not been an issue.

Absolutely, and it has given me opportunities that I would not have otherwise had. To mitigate the obvious risks, I bought a good used camera.

I keep a D700 (18-35), D300S (24-120)and a D2X (80-400) in a couple of black Domke bags on the backseat of my Honda Ridgeline, heavily tinted rear windows. They are almost always there 365 days of the year, if the weather is going to be extreme I might bring them in.
I've carried my stuff with me since I started taking pics in the 70's. All my gear always in the backseat, Never had a problem, Professional gear is tough enough to take riding about safely in a camera bag. Theft? hell I rarely lock my doors, of course I live in a virtually no crime area and work in the woods.

i never leave any of my good gear alone in car, one of my co-workers covering a space launch left it in car, sitting in parking lot under a light....long story short, he filed a police report for close to $20,000 in theft plus rental car broken window.

I do carry a small palm size zoom lens camera in glove box or center console in case I want to shoot somethiing & dont have my gear. Cost of camera ...under $100....but also have my I~Phone as last line of having something to take images with

As a few if any have stated: If you carry a smart phone you have a pretty good camera with you. Plus, you do have a pretty good telephone. Plus a great deal of computer power. Twenty first century is truly amazing! Haven't seen a practical pistol smart phone, yet, but I am sure "Es Kommt".

I leave a Sony RX100 VI in my vehicle. Would never do it with a film but electronics are designed to handle temp extremes. I don't live in the desert where temps would get too high and I don't live in Fargo where the temps might get too low.
