Air temp never reaches 100. Stick a meat thermometer in your car when it's outside. Especially if the car windows are not cracked. Solar oven...

All I can say is that it has never been an issue.

Personally I have forgotten a camera or another in my car... Never had one destroyed by heat of cold, they are under the seat on in the front passenger foot area.

That said, in 1981 I had a RB67 fly from the front seat into the dashboard (breaking hard). Broke the 180mm portrait lens...

Since I never travel with anything unless secured and unable to fly.

I also had my dog fly from the back seat to the front seat when I had a car accident in 1998... Damn dog took it as a game and seemed to want to do it again!!!

I have a small point-and-shoot that lives in my purse. If I have my purse, I have a camera. It has a thin stretchy neoprene case that takes up hardly any room but protects it from scratches.

Well I guess I am the by myself:
I have always left my cameras behind the front seat on the a heavy pad on the floor they are covered with at least three moving pads, I do bring them in the house if the temp. is going to drop below zero. The only problem I have had in over 20 yrs was when I forgot my camera bag and left it in the car uncovered and the temp dropped to -5f and a lens element separated on a Pentax kit lens.
I have not had any problems with condensation when taking equipment indoors from my car except going into a very warm humid environment .
I have been driving Grand Caravans and Ford Explorers for the last 20+ tears.
I never carry a camera on the seat unless there is something to put my start around.
AS far a security I have tinted windows and the inside of my van looks like it belongs to a homeless person.
My batteries do discharge a little bit faster in these conditions but have never failed to operate, however I do keep at least three set of batteries with me at all times.
I am no longer outdoors for over an hour when shooting in cold weather but carry a set of batteries in an inside pocket just in case.

If you have a recent model cell phone you have a camera. By the by. Last winter I dId leave my camera bag in the car for about 10 days. I took out the battery and just let everything come to room temperature. There are no problems with any equipment. We were in New Hampshire.

My camera bag and purse were stolen out of the trunk at 4:30 in the afternoon, in a busy parking lot next door to Marineland Florida. Never leave ANYTHING you value in the car. Also, the heat and or cold is bad for your electronics. I would recommend against it. When I have my bag in the car, it is going in and out of stores and restaurants right along with me.

I have a six-pack cooler that I use for my camera when it's in the car. Keeps it cool and out of sight. The cooler also stores an extra battery and maybe some other accessories.

Julie, almost any time I don't take my Nikon with me, I regret it. I have a quite-small "camera back pack" just large enough for one camera and a lens. By all means, take your camera but when you do, TAKE your camera with you when you exit the car, too. Good luck.

Are you leaving your camera in the car overnight? Then No, especially in cold weather, your camera, if cold enough, will fog up if you take it out of the car to shoot if there is a temp. change, cold to hot, hot to cold, etc.
And, there is always the possibility of having your camera stolen.
I just take my camera with me in the morning when I leave. When I worked I had a very simple camera bag, just held the camera, and I took it into work with me and put it under my desk.

Do professional National Geographic photographers have insulated and secure equipment boxes that bolt to the floor of their vehicles?

Besides the weather changes if you live in or near a metropolitan area someone would steal it. Even if you lock it. Our local paper sometimes publishes a list of recent crime stats, car break-ins are usually at the top. If I ever had to call the police for something like that they'd have to take my wife away too cause she'd kill me.

Always have a camera with me when out and about.

My 'larger' gear never stays in the vehicle. I do keep a pretty good point-and-shoot in the truck door storage space. It's small enough that you can't see it through the windows.

You can never be prepared enough for those three little letters 'U-F-O'.
