My first UGEARS model (ugears.us). It's 583 parts, all press-fit construction - no glue.
...and yes it has its own power source and it does move as do the drive rods. And for those who might ask, yes you must quarter the drive wheels just like a real loco. It comes with ~8 feet of track but I only used the short display section here. The loco/tender combo is just short of 2 feet long.
There is a bit of a learning curve, but they have a good instruction booklet and there is a step-by-step video of the build.

They say 10 hours - I likely took a bit more, but not much over 10.
Putting together some of the small pieces was tough on the fingers, but otherwise, it was a joy to build. They provide some spare pieces in the kit but will replace any pieces you break at no charge. I did, sadly, break one, but had the replacement inside a week.
Also Lego is producing a very intersting kit about the Cocrodile loco used on swiss railways , kit is composed by almost 1000 pieces and it is easy to build
