The Agony

I took this last year at the Cathedral of Sainte-Anne-de Beapre in Quebec City, of Mary holding Jesus after the crucifixion, with my iPhone 8 Plus. I thought the light hitting it exemplified His deity, and I thought the iPhone handled the difficult light fairly well.

Thanks. At the time I was trying to compare between what the iPhone could do and what my RX100VII could do. Unfortunately I didn’t get a shot of this scene with the RX.

It was a difficult lighting scene for sure. A significant portion of the body is completely blown out. I was wondering if you had put the exposure on the body before taking the shot, would it have given you a little more detail to work with in post editing. There is an HDR feature on the Native Camera app. I'm not sure how that would have handled that bright light.

So does this kind of result make us wonder why we don’t shoot full auto with our cameras and just let them do the work?

I think the answer to your question might be a resounding NO. Yes, smartphone cameras are pretty much point and shoot camera's with a fixed aperture. The take awesome snapshot images and the camera app does all the work. The fact that there are so many digital manipulation apps available now for smartphones makes me thing that people are still wanting to explore the creative photo side of their brains much like using manual on their DSLR cameras.

There’s probably a time and place for that. I don’t shoot in auto with my dedicated cameras. I don’t have much choice with the iPhone camera. At the time, however, I didn't’ have an app for manual exposure control. But I agree, a good part of the body is blown, unfortunately.

I can't tell if your phone has this level of control, but would suggest you look for it. I am speaking, of course, about some sort of pro mode to your camera. In pro mode, my Samsung note 9 will let me set the highlights low, so it meters like a big camera set on highlight priority. This may prevent, in some cases, the highlights being blown out.

Thanks for the tip.

Google "iPhone photography school" they have free instructional videos that will walk you through all of these issues. Even on the native iPhone app you can do a lot of amazing things. Good Luck
