The USPS has opened an investigation into the loss. It was shipped from Charlotte, NC to Mars Hill, NC.

My question is, how do these things get resolved when the item does not arrive for an extended period of time? I haven't been able to find any information on the inter-tubes.

I know I can contest the payment via Paypal or my credit card company. Is that my best option?

The tracking number would, to some degree, would help you track where the package was last known to be. The next thing I'd do is let paypal know of your intentions to protest the payment with your credit card company. Once you know Paypal knows, contact your credit card company and let them know what's going on.

Another hint would be to check the internet. That might be more successful than where ever you were looking.

No need to punish the seller for something that is the fault of the USPS. If the seller shipped in good faith, the rest isn't his fault. It is frustrating. I have had similar experiences, but with nothing very expensive. In northeast Arkansas all mail from points east of us and north of us is processed through the mail hub in Memphis, TN. It has to be one of the worst mail processing centers in the entire country. I have often had packages that the tracking shows to have arrived at the Memphis hub, and they will be there for the next two weeks, or more, before delivery, and sometimes they are not delivered. That is a distance of only about 80 miles from where I live.

Not much you can do to hold the USPS's feet to the fire. It seems they are the same bunch of entitled, lead footed civil service turtles they have always been. When I have asked the local P.O. if they can help, all they are able to do is look up the same tracking number I have access to online, shrug and say, "it looks like it is in Memphis but we can't tell you much beyond that."

They seem to have shielded themselves from any accountability for their actions. If they weren't still considered an essential service, they would have passed out of existence long ago.

Typical of USPS. They lost 32 books that I sent from Chattanooga to Memphis. Fortunately I had insured them. Never trust the P.O. to do anything right!

It seems to me that the error lies with the USPS. The shipment should have been insured and therein lies youer course of action.

Wait for the PO to investigate. If it was insured, they should pay. I think the seller who did the insuring will collect. Obviously, you don't have an insurance receipt. I don't think this will be settled quickly.

If the purchase was shipped by the seller and insured and you have tracking numbers and your address was correct as per the tracking info then you start a claim with the USPS. 4 years ago I sent 3 items back to my home from Hawaii. All 3 were damaged and the PO paid off on the claim in a reasonable time frame. As of late (4 months) I have not received or badly damaged from the USPS five items. The local PO just shrugs and blames the sending party.. Last week December 8th. I sent 2 packages one by Post office 2 day priority mail to Port Huron Mich 225 miles took 6 days to get there The other package was sent via FedEx to Nikon Inc Melville NY, 800 miles FedEx delivered it in 2 days. Hate to paint with broad brush but the civil servants at the post office are inept, good only for bulk mail. I receive all mail/ bills/ correspondence via email. I will not trust them with anything again. You wonder why the Post office is going broke.... They refuse to look in the mirror..

Occasionally there would be a package found "under the stairs" in receiving.
Stuff happens...

No Jerry I do believe that if the package was insured that the receipient should get the insured amount. The purchaser, one way or the other paid for insuring and sending the package.

With consideration to the millions of mail pieces put into the mainstream every day, each day; the percentage of reliable, timely delivery is very high.
Not many think about the pieces were delivered intact, on time.

I would file a claim with eBay. If the seller didn't insure the item, it is unfortunately his fault.
