Canon has a concept of TYPE-A and TYPE-B cameras, those supporting E-TTL II (A) and those that don't (B). You'd have to check your film camera and download the PDF for the 430EX to confirm. In general for type-B, the flash will fire, but only at full-strength in AUTO / TTL. You can control the flash output only by manually setting the flash on a type-B body, probably a difficult proposition with film.

Leftj, I have this flash, and it was the one I used with my EOS 650 film camera. Even if you do not get this one, they are out there used for very good price. I have used these flashes for many years, and this one is like old faithful. Try Robert's Camera Used Dept. Or B&H used. You will not be disappointed.

Thanks for the use experience. I have several vintage film cameras (All EOS AF) and one 5D classic. I don't use flash often but when you need it you need it. I buy used stuff from Robert's Camera, in fact I have a Nikon lens coming from them right now. I look at B&H used often but can't remember if I have ever purchased from them.

I know Robert's had some really good priced the other day when I looked. I use speedlights alot for fill flash, and this flash has never let me down. It is one of my older flashes too.
