Christmas Memories

The Family used to gather at either my Aunts House or my Grandmothers House for Christmas (their houses were larger than ours) until we were 12 us kids all ate at the children's table down by the Christmas Tree..from 12 on we joined the adults at the Big Table, and were allowed one glass of wine with dinner..when we were all adults we held progressive Meals. Appetizers at Laurie's place, dinner at my Aunts House and Dessert at my grandmothers they all lived thin 2 miles of each other..

A few years ago I made this Christmas chess set. Every year I enjoy getting the pieces out and setting them up. This year is no different and today I thought I'd share some of the pieces. The Christmas trees are the pawns. half of the trees are green and the remaining ones are red. The reindeer are the knights, The snowmen are the bishops, and then there is the kings and queens,Santa and Mrs. Claus and the houses are the castles. All of our grandchildren are chess players and depending who is visiting that day there is often a chess game underway.

Here's another old story around the Christmas tree...
Ever since I can remember...This wooden nut cracker came out and the story about it's history was reviewed...
It seems that my grandmother immigrated from Sweden in the middle of the 1800's. On her route here, a stop was made in Switzerland..She apparently perched this nut cracker as a souvenir. One Christmas many years ago when my dad was quite young, he decided to use the nut cracker on a brazil nut! This was somewhere around 1918 or so! The nutcracker was not made for such a challenge, and was broken in several areas! My grandparents were very upset about the damage! They insisted that it be repaired by my dad! Here it is on another Christmas-bearing the evidence of a "successful" fix 102 yrs later! A very unique Christmas memory!

Thank you Judy for your comment. Its either chess or Monopoly with the grandsons. Some year I think I’ll give the chess set to the family which has the oldest grandsons.

How about sharing Your best Christmases past with photos and story (ies).

When I turned 8, all I wanted for Christmas was a Saucy Walker doll! She was considered pretty expensive in
those days...$15.98! Saucy was my most prized doll for many years! Over time, she was played with by our
grands and endured many little busy hands! When she lost her arm, I put her in retirement (with the loose arm) in the attic! Of course, years later, I couldn't find the arm! Then one fateful day, There it was! I whisked her off to my favorite Doll doctor for surgery and cosmetic treatment....

I have a Santa collection of sorts. Each year I try to add to it.
1st was the Santa's Workshop. Then I got into cross stitching.
The Santa face in the heart was next & then the standing "cone"
Santa. A couple of years ago I took a wood carving class & made
that tree ornament. Other Santa's were purchased.

Santa hot pad-it's a Log Cabin block cut in 1/2. Later ones I put a white strip on the hat.
