"There is no inherit reasons why the mirrorless would take better pictures."

I respectfully disagree with the above statement. I use Olympus mirrorless cameras and I have been using Nikon cameras and lenses for more than 50 years and the images I make with my Olympus camera with Olympus and Panasonic lenses to my eyes they are awesome.
I know there are advantages to having a dSLR, like noise performance compared to my old Olympus bodies. Also their AF for action and wildlife is better than the AF of my cameras but when it comes to the Olympus EM-1X now it is a different story. I have no experience with Nikon, Canon or Sony mirrorless but I have heard their AF system is excellent.

When it comes to technology a mirrorless is very hard to beat and Olympus has some very nice and interesting technological features, one of them Live Composite. Using Live Composite at night will never cause overexposure of the bright lights and there are many applications for daylight use. With the EM-1X and its new software update bird eye detection through the use of AI is now a fact. I do not know of any dSLR that can do that. Something that I have enjoyed using with my Olympus bodies is the Live View. I can see in real time the progress of my exposures and I can also see the exposure of my subject before I make the image. This alone has improved my photography.

I have not enlarged any of the files of my Olympus bodies beyond 13x19 inches but those here that have blown the image to 20x30 have said that the quality is there. To close, some of my best shots have come from my Olympus cameras with Olympus and Panasonic lenses.

I traded my Nikon D60 for a Sony Alpha 7R3. No comparison really. I found the nikon a good camera but not in the same class as the Sony. Traded it in when Sony was offering $500. off on any working digital camera last year.

Of coarse there is no comparison. Look at when the D60/7R3 both came out & at the rate the tech keeps improving. $ 500 dollar was a great deal for that camera. You would be lucky to get $150.00 if tried to sell it.

The new Nikon mirrorless cameras have a different lens mount. Making all my lenses useless.

so I will look at the Nikon z5 and z7II

I read the new Canon mirrorless cameras use their same lens mount and
Canon lenses are def cheaper in price that a nikon lens.
Now that I am retired money is a lot more important than before.

but if you are using a mirrorless camera, what one are you using and how do you like it
and last but most important how is the picture quality compared to your old DSLR?

I have read reviews, I have talked to salesman . everyone has an agenda , as do some of you but I know i'll get some good answers.
Thanks

I have never used Canikon cameras. Most years new models of any make will improve on their previous technology, so images from newer cameras and lenses should get better. However, mirrorless v reflex is about how we view the subject before the shot, and will not directly make a better image - a better shot maybe - but not a better image.

An FTZ adapter will allow you to shoot your current Nikon lenses on the Z. And, look for ads now, Nikon will probably throw in the FTZ at a very low price when buying a Z.
And I believe Canon also offers an adapter as older Canon lenses will not fit their new mirrorless.

In your retirement, if as you say money is a concern, the last thing you need is a new camera. Why?

The EVF is bigger and brighter. The brightness can be adjusted? The camera is a bit lighter.

He said he has money concerns. Why spend the money? I don't care about the differences.

Your current Nikon lenses will not be worthless; Nikon makes an adapter so they will work on the Z cameras. The images from mirrorless may have a little more resolution in the corners, but any differences in general image quality will mainly be only noticeable under a microscope, or huge enlargement.
Since this is a time of retirement and saving money, if I was you, I'd think about this before chasing mirrorless. Ask yourself, "How long before sales of images due to the possible, slight increase in quality from the mirrorless camera/lenses actually PAYS FOR those new cameras and lenses?"
DSLR systems don't automatically become inferior tools just because there is new technology on the block.

I'm a shameless Olympus fan. I traded in all my heavy Nikon gear for the OMD m5 II and upgraded to the III. I've never looked back. In-camera stabilization is phenomenal! It's also a lot more price friendly for cameras, lenses, etc., even the PRO lenses. did I mention lighter? Have fun shopping and I hope you have a good camera store near you so that you can get a hands on feel for the camera.
