I recently participated in an F-Stoppers experiment comparing images form a D850 and an I-Phone in combination with a Profoto strobe.

Each image was processed then reviewed by a large number of people who were asked to pick the best between them. The I-Phone won 55% to 45%.

I was in the minority but still very impressed.

I can only image where the technology will be in a few years with phones, strobes/flashes and AI processing.

Wish I was 10 years younger.

So do I, but Pfizer pharmaceuticals might beg to differ. I didn't need Viagra then

When a phone can shoot fast action and blur backgrounds I will buy one. Until then, I will stick with my Sony.

WOW!
I originally asked if it was a Glossy Ibis then I saw your later comment that it was. I have seen them on the ground but never in flight. They are beautiful and your photograph is fantastic.
Thanks for posting it.

When I look at recent photos and compare them to photos taken a decade ago (in art galleries, on the internet, in magazines, etc.), I see practically no significant improvements at all. Certainly some aspects of photography have become easier, but photographers as a whole have not really improved their output.

Very interesting point that I will second. I don't look at all award winning pictures but I do see lots of pictures in various formats and forums and I constantly see the same shortcomings in composition, depth of field, contrast and motion to name a few issues. While I approve of having the best equipment you can afford I agree with all those who point out that the photographer is the biggest variable.

What was the medium the comparison photos were presented? I would imagine digital. The iPhone photos may not have looked as good if they had been printed out at 11x14 or 16x20.

Hi Mac. I'm with you. I've always shot "real" cameras. Over the last few weeks I've seen some very nice photos on the Hog, taken with cellphones. They looked so good on the screen, I decided to try my iPhone 8 as a camera. I've shot a couple hundred photos over the last couple weeks. I must say I am surprised at the quality. Now Dave posts some really nice work with his iPhone 11. I didn't expect much from my old 8 model. Man was I wrong. I took a shot of a well preserved red barn, j-peg cause that's all my phone will shoot. It looked good as an 8.5x11. I just had to know how that mickey mouse little file would enlarge. I made the largest print my Canon Pro 1000 will print. That 17x22 really astounded me. Looking at it on the wall I couldn't say for sure if I shot with my iPhone 8 or my Sony A7Riii. I have decided that once Apple releases the iPhone14.3 software version, I'll give then a month or so spray it with Raid & then I'll update to an iPhone 12 Pro. I'm pretty sure that the best camera on earth is the one with me.

I say trot 'em all out to the racetrack under the lights and see which wins. Or surfing at dusk. Or a high school football game. Or...how 'bout some BIF? ;0)

...shot with an I-phone 4s and processed in LR/PS. All staged and set up that phone did quite well...

Who of us are old enough to remember the days when we were taught to "never point a gun at anyone"?

Check out the Samsung Note 20 ultra specs and camera comparison to the new IPhone 12 max. Has I believe up to 108mp wide angle camera and a 5x optical telephoto lens!

Apparently you missed some of the posts that said otherwise.

Nope - I've done the tests myself.

This is physics - 12MP wont stand up to 24MP and the same is true up the scale.

Also there is no getting around the noise of a micro sensor in a phone - bottom line - there is a thing called physics and you can cheat it but not break it.

Yes, they look good on screens and in small formats - make a big blow up and compare side by side and you will see that they do not stand up.

Do it for yourself - then judge.

...haha...my dad taught me that meme when I was a toddler. But then, due to a rabid governmental invasion of my privacy, I got to point guns at *alot* of people! ;0)
Now, you know I set that shot up, right? That's at Knott's Berry Farm and those actors got to flash the (plugged) hardware hither and yon...!

...software like Gigapixel AI allows us to make those little files not-so-little. That might be a "cheat" but it works!
