Watch the video and you will know what I know.

I just received the IPhone 12Max this week and will say the photos it takes are easily comparable to a dslr. For a pocket camera it does as well if not better than my Olympus T-6 and there’s no processing needed. Here’s a closeup of a small tree rose that I just now shot.

I consider the photograph of that rose demonstrates nothing other than poor photos can also be taken with the phone you used.

Hi Mac,
They were both shooting raw captures, as I do with an iPhone11ProMax. I make large prints - just got back a 20x36 (not a dinky 11x14 or 16x20 ) and image quality is absolutely amazing.

I should say that when I am shooting with large prints in mind I shoot EBTR to assure that I’m using the full allotment of raw-accessible DR my iPhone can offer to get the maximum available tonal spectrum and thus maximum discernible detail permitted by the 12 bit-depth image file.
So, don’t scoff at large prints ( and I don’t mean little 11x14 or 16x20) from an IPhone until you have made a serious effort to make them.

Does anybody know if these smartphones do pixel shifting? That would significantly increase the pixel count from a small sensor, and it seems to me that smartphones could do this quite well.

I'm not familiar with that term. "Pixel Shifting". What is it?

I have an iPhone 8+ and it takes good photos.

In good light.

In poor light, my DSLRs do a significantly better job.

Have not tried photos from newer iPhones. Mine is 2 years old.

Depends on what kind of photo your taking. The iphones have a night mode now but, I doubt it could do a milkyway pano just yet. With the way AI is developing it might not be long.

I recently participated in an F-Stoppers experiment comparing images form a D850 and an I-Phone in combination with a Profoto strobe.

Each image was processed then reviewed by a large number of people who were asked to pick the best between them. The I-Phone won 55% to 45%.

I was in the minority but still very impressed.

I can only image where the technology will be in a few years with phones, strobes/flashes and AI processing.

Wish I was 10 years younger.

When a phone can shoot fast action and blur backgrounds I will buy one. Until then, I will stick with my Sony.

Wow ! I guess I should get an iPhone and sell my Samsung, if its that good.

The option gets easier to make. A lot of consumers don't know or care about DSLR's

No surprise really. At 12 MP there is enough resolution to compare well on reasonably sized images (ie. 8x10?) and the short focal length will produce considerable depth of field (sharp images). I find the portrait mode very usefull improvement. They produce descent images and are certainly convenient.

The brutal realities...
I shoot League Soccer (albeit spring, summer and fall season's were canceled this year do to the pandemic).

There are countless parents and friends of the players on the sidelines taking "Cell" imagery of the matches yet I'm still turning away clients...

Yes the technology of cells is epic! And their video capabilities rival even high end kit...
In fact they have become a vehicle of social change never before achieved by SLR's DSLR's and Mirrorless...
The brutal last minute of George Floyd's life captured on a Cell Phone generated a Tsunami of massive social outcry never before seen by any photojournalist's effort. This nation and actually the entire world was rocked to it's core by this heart wrenching video...

The Cell Phone has now become an iconic and most feared weapon in it's deployment against tyranny at all levels... enough said...

Thank you, it is a image of a Glossy Ibis, these birds were almost hunted to extinction by the 18th and 19th century European Hat industry, because of there beautiful colors. When they turn to the light just right you can really see their diversity of colored feathers. And in mating season it get even better.
