captivecookie, yes these are macros in the sense of extreme close-up. What lens were you using?. I would look at what was your intended point of focus.

Hi, Fran. The camera and lenses are from a variety of sources. Macro isn't something I usually pursue.

Captive cookie, what I usually do when I shoot macro is to choose the part of my subject that I have the most interest in, choose aperture based on how much I want in focus, and shoot parallel to the subject. These seem to help get what I want.
