Some of my best shots were those I never thought would be any good. Thank goodness I always shoot raw.

Point and shoots like the Canon SX40 do jpegs unless you hack into the camera hardware. I usually take it into Photoshop Elements 10 or Perfect Photo Suite 6.1. In both of these they end up as PSD files. I also almost always use "save as," so I have an original sitting there. In Mac there is a possibilty of lossy and lossless JPEG. I assume it is there on PC platform too. But anyway I don't want to hack, so I am stuck.

I use RAW all the time. Why would I invest in a 16mp camera and then allow the camera to decide which pixels to throw away?

Where it is available ie on my A300 and Sony R1 I shoot raw 100% if I am just snapshotting I will shoot raw and jpeg so I can shove them on Facebook a bit lively but still have the original raw file just in case. All my catalogued images are raw files and I use bridge to handle them as I haven't got my head around Lightroom yet. I only shoot jpeg only on my point and shoots that have no raw option and to be honest I very rarely use them unless I'm somewhere where I haven't planned to do any "serious" photography. Just my 50 pence worth though, I think it depends how much creative control you want over your originals

You Guys are Killing Me. You tell everyone to shoot raw but Where's the Photos. I went back and checked everyone that shots raw, 100% of the Time.. Nikonian is the only one that post photos. Most of you Raw shooters have Not Even Posted One Photo.... And the few that have maybe 5 or 6.. You Rave how great Raw is but you post No Photos or just a couple. All of my shots are in JPEG. Not the best in the world, but you guys ain't even Posted anything to Look at.. Is your Photos still Processing?? I wasted one week of my life on Raw, that was almost 2 years ago. If you have to rely on Raw processing to pull data from the shadows and highlights of todays cameras, maybe you should read a book or two on photography. I recommend Understanding Exposure edition3 by Brain Peterson. There are qualified Raw shooters on this format.but you got to Post some decent photos before you start Trashing shooting in JPEG. Stop giving opinions when you got no photos............

excuse me, but I have posted photos that were converted from Raw on this site as well as others besides Nikonian. You like jpeg, that is fine. I prefer raw, that doesn't make either of us less of a photographer. That is the nice thing about photography, it is a huge tent. Weather you shoot with a Polaroid sx-70, a Hassenblad, a large format view camera, film, digital, 4/3rd's or full frame you still are practicing photography. Whatever floats your boat is fine.

I beg your pardon; I shoot RAW (NEAF in Nikon terms) and have posted many shots (including my avatar). Check this one out: :hunf:

Dude, Post a good photo and I'll give you credit. Color is off, focus is off and shadows are not right. How did Raw help with this??

I have posted photos on here. Some of my best ones were shot in Jpeg, when my compact superzoom Panasonic DMC TZ5 did not support RAW. Of course I bracketed +1, 0, -1 to get the optimal exposure, and often did an HDR composite. As in the example below. But once I went to a DSLR, I have shot exclusively in RAW and rarely bracket except for extreme contrast subjects. If I shot hundreds of photos a day, I would probably follow Ken Rockwell's advice and shoot in Jpeg to save time in processing. But I don't, and love the control I have shooting in RAW and converting to excellent Jpegs based on my preferences, not the camera's.

ƒstop22, I don't think anyone was trashing shooting in JPEG or any other format for that matter. It is simply a matter of preference and whether or not you choose to spend time in PP. As for posting photos, I for one am rather leary about posting anywhere! I use my work to supplement my income, and there are far too many unscrupulous people out there who find it easier to rip off the amateur or pro photographer just because they "found it on the web, it must be free", even though our copyright is plainly visible. But if you must see my work to validate my claims, please refrain from commenting on my © across the image, and concentrate on the body of work. Respectfully 33 Rivers (WJB4)

As stated I shoot RAW and JPEG. I post quite a few shots on the site. This is a Raw processed in Lightroom 4.
