Number 2 is the one I prefer. I would rather see the water than the sky. The nice long reflection works better to lead the eye into the frame.

It depends. I prefer the second / middle with the reflection leading to the sun. You might have let the reflection following the right vertical 1/3 guide, as you did in the top / first image.

This is difficult to answer, as it's akin to making a silk purse...

The better presentation would have been to photograph the three compositional questions individually and ask for a preference.

I prefer the first one. I feel a dynamic balance in it and can "see" the sun setting. In the second I see a static balance that to me feels rigid. The third just has too much sky and to little water for my tastes.

The first image works for me from a composition standpoint.

I prefer #3 with sunset shown as a more distinctly Earthly phenomenon occurring in its local region of the broadly expansive Cosmos.

I find it, in sum, a more engaging and interesting composition.

I'm not sure what you mean by "photograph the three compositional questions individually". My question was whether it would be more pleasing to align the sun or the horizon with the third points in this situation. That may not have been clear.

It was very clear. Perhaps mine wasn't. If you had taken three photographs with each depicting the positioning as shown it would be possible to determine with was the more favorable. Simply moving the, cropping, or whatever a single image doesn't realign the sun's reflection on the water. Thus, any attempt to compose the photograph after the fact leads to "unreal" looking alignments of reflections. It may only be a subtl few degrees but it is noticeable.

They actually are three separate photos, taken a few seconds apart. Apparently I neglected to store the originals on the last two so you weren't able to see the file names or EXIF data. If you look closely at the positions of the birds in the water that will become apparent.

In that case, I'll pick the first one. It just appears more natural.

I don't have a problem with #1. If I did, a slight trim off the top of #1 would probably be enough for me.

Having things centered (vertically or horizontally) is a problem only if you do it all the time. It's the sort of mistake that beginners make and that's why you see that advice repeated as much as you do.

If I had to choose between #2 and #3 I would choose #2 because the reflections make a better focus of interest. The sky is relatively flat and featureless and therefore doesn't make such a good focus of interest.

I see no competition - for me #1 is a clear winner and a great picture

Fix the tilted horizon.
