The subconscious allure of a mall that keeps you shopping is called a Gruen transfer.

never saw spending money as a recreational activity, but i've seen the phenomenon and wondered if it had a name.

now i'm going to get everyone mad at me, but the little kids (thirteen year old pretending to be "kewel") and the forever thirty two year olds cruising around the mall all seemed to be spending someone elses money: their parents' or their husbands' - it all struck me as vapid and crude and transactional- -"here kid, have a wad of cash and get out of my face for half a day... your mom will drive you to the mall with their friends and you can all 'cruise around' " ... so this is how we teach our kids their value?
eeeeew..

ok - that's the tirade for the day ... it's safe to come out now

Our mall is over a mile walk for 1 inside lap, so we elderly form the "Mall-Walkers". In winter, it is the safest place to get our exercise.

Shouldn't that be a "green" transfer? :D

Way back, when I lived near malls, they would hire young ladies to take surveys. I got tired of being accosted every hundred feet or so. I finally figured out that if I tensed my muscles and scowled (not at them!) as I approached, they would find another customer to pester! ;)

Sounds like Ikea. They try to force you to traverse the entire store no matter if you want only one thing and have the perserverance to just buy that item.

Nope.

Named after Austrian architect Victor David Gruen, mastermind of the modern shopping mall.

I don't frequent malls. I can't find my way to my car or back home.

I once dated a very wealthy woman who once in a while would described herself as "bored". She then engaged in what she called "Retail therapy" basically a spending binge or more politely a shopping spree. She had closets full of clothes with all the tags still on them.
