Can somebody with a Z body let me know the answer to this one. I use BBF and my wife hates it. I wonder if the U modes remember the setting for BBF or shutter button focus...if so then I can easily configure my wife’s soon to be Z50 to make both of us happy. Conversely...if using the A, S, or Auto modes automatically switches back to shutter button focus that would work too.
I’m gonna get her a Z50 anyway...but being able to configure it so either of us is happy would be a plus.
Be sure to let us know how that works out ...

The answer should be in the user's manual.

I’m sorry I don’t know the answer to the U-mode question. So I looked in my manual. On page 75 of the Z6 Z7 Reference Manual, under User Settings it says:
Adjust settings.
Make the desired adjustments to camera settings, including:
• photo shooting menu options,
• movie shooting menu options,
• Custom Settings, and
• shooting mode, shutter speed (modes S and M), aperture
(modes A and M), flexible program (mode P), exposure compensation, and flash compensation.
So that implies you could program BBF on one U-setting and shutter button focus on another. Please try it and report back here if it works.
However I do know that your wife being happy with her camera is more important than you using it with BBF. My advice is that you help her program her camera the way she likes it. And leave it that way. And why are you shooting with her camera? If you must shoot with her camera, then “suck it up”
and use it in shutter button focus mode.
Obviously you need to get a ZII and your problem will be moot.
It’s an interesting question, I’ll try it on mine and report back.
Hi
Yes I have both U1 and U2 with back button only but in M,A,S and P back button still works but so does the shutter button for focus.

Sounds to me like your best solution is to buy two Z 50's.

I believe you are correct. I misread where the manual said what U1 and U2 can't save.

Does the menu offer both BBF & shutter. It is probably a compermise for you but, It is her camera.
Good luck. & happy shooting.

So it’s not working.
Sounds like you need to revisit to the settings and turn shutter button focus OFF.

I read it to mean that he has the shutter button focus OFF only when he switches the dial to U1 and U2.
Having both on doesn't seem to make sense. If you focus with the back button and let go to lock focus, then press the shutter button you override the locked focus. If that's the case it confirms my opinion that many people who jumped on the back button focus never really figured out why they did it.

Maybe that’s what he meant.
I completely agree with all that you said.

Totally negating the idea of BBF. No reason to use BBF if the shutter is gonna override it.
