I have the sony A-6500 and I use primarily the pz oss 18-105 f4 G lens. I was wondering if anyone has any expirence with their 2x teleconverter, I don't have thousands of dollars for any of their long lenses and they don't really have a large selection. I know I lose 2 stops of light but can I expect sharp pictures. I would appreciate any advice you have to offer.
I would advise against the 2x tc (which I own) and go for the 1.4 (which I rented). The 1.4 is sharper. Maybe not as much reach, but a better result.

Be sure to check which lenses are compatible. Not all are. In general, only the GM series are compatible. Best to check the website.
I’m pretty sure it will only work with the 70-200 GM, the 100-400 GM, the 400 and the 600 GM’s
You would be better to pick up a 55-210 lens, they are a little over $200 on Amazon and you can get them used for less on KEH or other sites.

The Sony teleconverters do not physically fit any of the APS-C lenses. The converter has an element that protrudes into the lens, which is why don't full-frame lenses don't fit either.
These are the compatible lenses, according to the B&H web site:
FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS
FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS
FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS
FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS
FE 600mm f/4 GM OSS

Aside from lens compatibility, I am having great success with Sony's E mount 2x converter. I would say "yes" that the IQ is not quite as good as the lens itself, or with the 1.4x, but still very, very good. I could not regularly get the same results with my Canon gear. Assuming the glass and body you are using are compatible, I would not hesitate at all to use the Sony E mount 2x converter.
Here is an example taken with a7RIII with Sony's 400mm f2.8 plus 2x converter (800mm) with a crop for composition. Probably not the greatest example, but it is definitely usable. Hope this helps.

Yes these are the current compatible Sony lenses for the 1.4X and 2X converters. Sony has some more long lenses coming before the Olympics that will also be compatible.
I have both the 70-200mm f2.8 GM and 200-600mm f5.6-6.3 lenses and also have both the 1.4X and 2X teleconverters and they work amazingly well with both lenses. They are top quality teleconverters and priced accordingly. I love using the 2X on my 70-200mm f2.8 GM for a fairly handholdable 140-400mm f5.6 lens. The photos are still very sharp and the autofocus works the same, teleconverters or not.
I also have used both the 1.4X and 2X on my 200-600mm f5.6 and it is awesome to have both an 840mm and 1200mm lens. I can deal with the 1 stop (1.4X) and two stop (2X) light loss and just up my ISO. The Sony sensors handle that without any real issues. I highly recommend them both.
FYI I shoot with A9, A7RIV and new A7SIII. And I have 12 E-mount lenses from 10mm to 600mm from Sony, Tamron, Sigma plus the two Sony teleconverters. Cheers
