I had a D850 and recently got a used D500 from Roberts.
Both Cameras are set the same :Main Slot RAW Second slot JPEG

The D850  produces Raw photos on one card and JPEG photos on the second card
The D500  produces JPEG photos on both cards

Is there possible a setting that I am missing on the D500? I have been trying to fix this for two days and I am still getting the same results...the D500 produces JPEG photos on BOTH cards.

Any help / advise would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Is the camera set to take Raw, or just jpg.

Another thought to add to letmedance's suggestion: are there some shooting modes that don't support raw?

You need to choose “RAW+jpeg” in the image quality settings. You probably can get to it from the i screen.

I have a D500. Look at pages 91 and 284 in the owner's manual. The Image Quality setting has the RAW, jpeg, RAW+jpeg, and TIFF options.

Another thought - how can you tell whether or not there is a RAW copy? Can you look into the camera with your "file manager" or Windows Explorer?
Are you using a program to download that can't understand the RAW file (it is too new) and doesn't show it? if so you need a later version with the latest CODEC.

Was the camera set to in camera processing of some type that only produces/works with jpeg.

Look in the manual (or google it) and reset to factory defaults. Then go through and set things the way you like them.

This might help - I use their suggestions for my Canon bodies when I first get them.

Regardless of the settings you have for the memory cards, the camera itself is probably only set to shoot in JPEG. Setting what will be written to which memory card has nothing to do with what is captured, It only affects, once captured, where an image will be saved.

Your menu setup is correct. Now you need to press the "Qual" button and scroll through the options until you see "Raw" in the top box and "Fine" (or whatever quality you want) in the bottom box (all of this in the top display window). As you will see while scrolling through, there is one series of JPEG options alone, another set with Raw+JPEG, and a single option with TIFF by itself. Check how your D850 looks before you start and compare the D500 to it. They should look identical in order to work the same. On the second page of the Shooting Menu, "NEF Raw Recording" gives you some options if you should ever want or need to compress (lossless) your raw images.

Find the "re-set" for all camera settings. Reset. Turn the camera off and place a fresh battery in the camera. 🎥 📷 Turn your camera on and re-do the settings you desire.

Not necessary. Unikely that anything is wrong or out of kelter here. This is a standard setup step. You first have to tell the camera what to do, then you have to tell it to do it.This adjustment is required right out of the box.

I am not sure what you are looking at, both my D500 and D850 only allow RAW primary-JPEG secondary.
This is also described on pages 96 and 283 of you D500 User's Manual.

Not quite correct. If you don't tell it to capture both with the Quality control, it will only keep JPEGs, and it defaults to "Backup" unless you specifically set it to "Overflow." By the way, you also select which of the two cards is primary and which is secondary. I use the SD card as my primary card. You also have to tell it separately where to put videos.

The first thing is to save any custom settings you've made, then do a factory reset of the D500. Manually make the changes to saving as. On my D500 & D850, I set the XQD card to save the RAW format due to its speed in copying. & I use the SD card simply for overflow.

I will not go through the instructions given out by another UHH member on where to read the D500 user manual to change your settings..

Good Luck
