Lake Los Carneros is a fairly small and shallow lake in Goleta, Ca. We’ve had three osprey fishing the lake the last ten days; not something we see that often. I’ve been trying to get these fast fishing hawks in focus but I’m not always successful. But I thought you might enjoy the lake reflection, and the fascinating way these amazing birds enter the water for their fish once they spot it with their incredible eyesight. They have gripping pads on their feet to help them capture the fish with their curved talons and carry them to a convenient spot to eat their catch. In flight, ospreys will turn the fish headfirst to more easily fly. I’ve included several photos of the osprey once it leaves the water with its fish.......it shakes its whole body to rid itself of water, and never loses the fish!

An extraordinary series! The first image is a magnificent portrait, beautifully timed and looks as though it were planned carefully from first eye contact. Technical excellence - focus, shutter speed, exposure all seem spot on in the whole series - a formidable record of the bird's M.O. Capturing the dive-bombing technique of the bird was exceptionally well timed, and the bird's recovery well documented. A beautiful portrayal of the birds fishing and flying capabilities which also clearly documents your own. Please stay well and keep up the exceptional work on BIF. Thanks for sharing.

Doesn’t get better than that! What lense and speed were you using?

1/3200 shutter priority, with a Nikon AF-S 300MM f/4E PF ED prime lens (with a 1.4 teleconverter for extra reach) on my Nikon D780.

Thank you for checking in!

Nice bokeh away from the water. 1st shot ought to go on your wall!

Thank you so much! I don’t know if that shot is crisp enough for an enlargement but I got lucky with the lake’s reflective surface. The wind came up a bit later.....

Yes. Reflections are special and it is good enough; the eye is very well in focus. A really great moment for you!
