I have been re-formatting my cards after downloads, but I'm wondering if I should be deleting images instead. Any thoughts?

I always format since it’s quicker- I don’t have to select what I would delete. But mainly I feel better since it recreates the “blueprint” of the card file structure, just in case some error has crept in.
I don't take that many shots each outing, so I only worry about deleting when it gets full. I carry a spare card. When I get home I upload to my computer the new shots from both cards, then re-format the older one since deleting so many photos at one time is cumbersome. It then becomes my backup card.
You're uploading your images to your computer, creating backup copies, and them formatting the card in your camera? That's the way I do it and so far, I've never had a problem. I hope I didn't just jinx either of us. :-)

I can’t imagine having to delete, one at a time in my camera, hundreds of photos. Formatting permanently deletes them anyway and it’s sooooo much quicker.

Edit
I have also found that if I delete them on my IMac then put the card back in the camera without formatting, the card still sees used space in the file system, but not the data. This is on an EOS file setup.

I delete in camera as I go along shooting and reformat card in the camera after downloading the images to my computer.
Big thank you to all. Some good ideas. Will continue with formatting the card.
Here we go. I bet 15 pages minimum.
Whatever trips your breaker.
I delete on the card via computer after transfer and backup.
I delete some in camera if I know I don't want them.
I haven't formatted a card,other than initially, in years!
I treat it as simply another storage device.
Floats my boat...

I just 'delete all except saved' after download. The only saved image is a photo of my name and phone numbers in case I should absentmindedly leave the camera somewhere and an honest Joe should pick it up.

That is a very useful idea and a good reason for not formatting for deletion. Thanks.
I usually use a card reader, so I just delete them after the upload. I've never seen a camera maker recommend formatting repeatedly.
If you believe Ken Wheeler, he says the deleting images can corrupt your card and you should always format. Is he correct? That I do not know.
