How about trying the Clone Tool and smear the noisy areas.

OK, you have a very good photograph and captured some excellent action. Why focus the discussion on noise?

In film we have grain. The faster the film, the more apparent the grain. It's part of photography. The unfortunate aspect of digital is that the electrical engineering term 'noise' was used. There's nothing wrong with noise/grain. It's part of the image. So there is no need to "correct" it.

I hasd exactly the same thought. Moreover unless you want to print very large, if you are more than 6inches away you wont see the "noise" anyway. (amusing concept--seeing noise)

Goof grief I need new eyes - while in the zoomed-in pictures I see a small difference - it is a beautiful picture to start with - great job and timing!

A dark overcast day. Sony 7AR4 set to 1/2000, 200mm F5.6 (Sony 200-600) auto iso @ 12800.

Timing is everything and timing was just about perfect for this confrontation between a downy and sparrow.

The noise unavoidable but can it be corrected. I’ve tried Photoshop and Topaz denoise with almost no effect. This OOC image just won’t correct. Any ideas how I can smooth out that background? BTW, shot was through a glass door.

Image, uncorrected, resized, jpg from raw file.

Gorgeous shot! Look at the awesome capture - not something to diminish it, IMHO

As someone else said, if you can make a mask and denoise just the background, it would be fine. The over-smoothing caused by the de-noising algorithm completely changes all of the texture in the feathers. Let's be reasonable, you are using 12800 ISO - you should be very happy with the small amount of noise that you are getting at this ultra-high ISO. It is about the same as you would have got from a 400ASA 120-size film (if there had been enough light to use it) and it was tough to push that to 1600.

As i many things in life- You have to give. in order to get. You have a very good image here. You had to go to a high ISO to get that image and with that you often get a little noise (We use to call it grain). If you blow up any image big enough you will see noise. So unless you want a mural size image. Ignore the slight noise. No one but a very picky judge will even notice it Alot depends upon viewing distance. If the viewer is more than a foot away he wont even see the noise.

I agree, noise is part part of the art. Like film grain is.

It is an interesting photo in itself, nice action. I think the moment says it all, the sparrow is holding on my one talon. Anyone catch that? The corrected version has a graphic quality that to me makes it less photographic. You can't necessarily see that the attacking birds feathers are up. In the corrected one the look painted.
