Shooting Film Styles in Camera (Nikon).....

I'm not really sure where to post this so I settled here and figured the Mods could sort it out!!

~ I know most people like to do their post-work to settle an image to their taste - shoot RAW or whatever. For myself, I have to have a specific outcome in mind if I'm going to shoot RAW. Under most circumstances, I will shoot JPEG and tweak from there.
...So with that in mind, I like to play with the camera settings to try and emulate "Film Looks" in camera. I know Fuji has settings for this in-camera I guess. I shoot Nikon for the most part, so no good there for me!

So, I happen to find this after a short Google search: "Shoot Film Styles On Your Nikon In-Camera, For Free". This being at the "SLR Lounge" website. I found it VERY interesting to say the least!
...I downloaded Tri-X, T Max 400, Portra160, Velvia, and several other settings to my Nikon D5200. Worked like a charm!! https://www.slrlounge.com/shoot-film-styles-on-nikon-how-to/

Now, I need to get busy and go out with my new Toys (settings) and play!! .... Whooohooo!!

I've played with some of those. I'm even working on emulating dye transfer. Since the "in camera" settings require shooting in jpg, I prefer attempting "the look" using processing techniques. NIK, which has been passed around by a couple of companies, has a film appearance module. I have not really been pleased with the look of any of their out of the can modifications. That said, I'd prefer to apply the effect in processing as opposed to limiting myself to 8bit jpg images.

I shoot RAW and JPEG, so if I were to try that I would continue to keep the raw file since, once you hit the shutter release, you are pretty well stuck with what you've got, so I like the insurance value of the raw file.
I have been building presets in ON1 to emulate film effects from my memory of using Ektachrome, Fujifilm and Tri-X. I still shoot Portra and Tri-X in my Mamaya RB654, so I have recent reference material.
Good to know that these styles are out there and can be imported into the camera - I probably will try them and see how they come out.
Sorry about the ramble...
Thanks for sharing, stay well and keep up the good work.

And! I concur! Post Processing, whether using RAW or JPEG will give the best results, for sure. The in-camera emulations, in my opinion, are playthings that have artistic value if used correctly - albeit I'm betting that I will STILL have to PP knowing myself!!

... and I have downloaded a bunch and put 8 on the D5500 for fun. Thanks again for the heads-up. Time for some experimentation.

I don’t see this as a you.

I see it as a way to view a far more accurate BW preview than would otherwise be possible to

Meant to say I don’t see it as a toy.

I hate autocorrect.
