Carolina Mantis

This is one of the Carolina Mantis which I believe to be a male from the Bill (newtoyou) collection. I bring one of them out from time to time for they are such interesting specimens.

The male and female Carolina Mantis look very different from one another. The adult female has short wings and is big and heavy. The male has long wings and is small, light and active. The male is able to fly and will do so readily, but the female is unable to fly. You can encourage the females to stay around your garden if you feed them insects that you catch and they are quite beneficial and the true aliens among us.

There are some striking specimens of mantis with unique body colors and configurations such as the Orchid Mantis and the Devil's Flower Mantis however the Carolina Mantis bodies are straightforward and streamlined and all camouflage comes from its body color and pattern unlike several other species of mantis.

Thanks and I suspect that the mantis were inspiration for many Sci-Fi characters.

Thanks, CHG_CANON. I follow all of your professionally done work and I enjoy reading all of the narratives and your advice on gear.

I use a salad of gear for these micro images, Fujifilm X-T20 camera, X-mount to F-mount adapter, vintage Novoflex Bellows, and an industrial telecentric Nikon TM 5X magnification microscope objective as the camera lens which makes me an "equal opportunity gear guy".
