Hi,

I have been reading several posts and decided to join. I am extremely new. I currently have a Canon EOS 60D with just the basic lens that came with the kit several years ago. I am going to sell that one and am getting ready to upgrade to the 90D or up if another is better and really want input on what lens to purchase. I was talking with someone over the weekend that recommended I needed an 85mm first. but I would really appreciate input. I will be taking lots of animal pictures in motion. ( to start with my dogs) All suggestions appreciated. I am very excited to learn....
thank,
Nancy

Welcome to the forum.

What lens came with the kit?

Shoot with that for a while to see how it works for you before you get more lenses.
(Then you can figure out what kind of coverage you would like.)
Everyone will be very happy to spend your money, on things that they like to use.

You might want to check out https://digital-photography-school.com/ at some point.

Ok, As a REALLY NEW Photographer, as you might already know, "Light" is the foundation of understanding Photgraphy, so I would suggest learning the Exposure Triangle, which is the the balanced combination of 3 ingredients that CREATE a Photographic Image. Those consist of, APERTURE, ISO, & SHUTTER-SPEED.
In your stated of immediate interest of "Animals in Motion", your main concern will be SHUTTER-SPEED, although you must also Know you will need the "Correct Balance" between all 3 of the components of the "EXPOSURE TRIANGLE". Understanding these three aspects and knowing how to balance them will not be difficult, just PRACTICE. There is more, but this will get you started.

Welcome Nancy! Looking forward to see some of your images. I won't comment on the lens, except to say that an 85mm is versatile. Stay well and start posting some work. Don't be shy - most of the photographers here remember what it felt out when they started the voyage, although sometimes it may not seem that way...

Nancy;

Welcome. If there's one thing you will not find a shortage of here, it's opinions.

For Doggie pictures in motion, you cannot go wrong with a 24-70 zoom. A zoom will give you the ability to capture the action without the focal length limitations of a prime lens.

Hi Nancy, welcome to the "Hog." If I may make a suggestion, keep the 60D...I too have a 60D, and have used it through Italy and Israel. It is a workhorse, and will give you excellent images, some of which I have enlarged to 30 x 40... When I taught beginners, I would first say to them to use what they have right now and then after a while, once they see how to use their current camera, then, and only then, invest in a more technical camera and lens. That they shouldn't go equipment crazy right away. If you would like to PM me on this, feel free to do so.

Rich...

Welcome to the forum Nancy. For what you plan to shoot I would go with a zoom lens either a 24-70 or 24-105mm lens. I have both and they cover 98 percent of the shots. Good luck.

Welcome, lens choice depends on your budget as much as what you are shooting, top 2 lenses for me on both a T4i and a T1i are 17-70 Sigma and 10-18 Canon, 24mm right behind them, YMMV, Bob.
