Another one where the pose dictated my title - the 😈 made me do it-honest!

These are small diving ducks that hunt fish, crayfish, insects and other small water dwellers plus a limited amount of plants under water by sight. They have an extra eyelid that acts like goggles under water and they can change the refractive properties of their eyes to see better under water.

They nest in tree cavities up to 1/2 mile from water and as high as 50 feet. In spite of that the ducklings jump out and flutter to the ground at one day of age when Mama calls them out. They then follow her to the water where they promptly get swimming lessons and start hunting food in very shallow water by themselves. After a week or so they venture into deeper water. Oh, Dad disappears after the eggs are laid.
They will readily take to properly sized nest boxes in yards if not too far from water.

There are very few places in the 48 states they have not been seen, they also live from Southern Alaska across Southern Canada to the Atlantic. They stay year round in a large part of their range and the ones that migrate often don't leave until winter ice starts to form and return within days of the ice melt starting.

When he turned his head to look back the male folder his crest but she still has her crest up. I had shots of them both with the crest up swimming side by side but I liked this one and the title it suggested.
